Bratislava is a magnificent place to visit and even to live. Similar in many aspects to Prague, it offers a good feeling of safety. I would say: it is still a provincial city offering the advantages of a Middle European capital. It is very safe, it is not overcrowded by tourists and is relatively cheap ( not very cheap, but offers good value for the money you spend).

Bratislava Old Town with The Bratislava Castle
Bratislava is literally bordering Austria and Hungary; Vienna is only 50 km away, Prague 220; Budapest 400. Long time Bratislava has been in the shadow of these notorious cities of the former Hapsburg Empire. Bratislava met some dramatic changes in the structure of its population, which is nowadays 90 % Slovak. But in the Middle Age, under the name Pressburg, was renowned as German city. Also in the Middle Age, Bratislava was the capital of Hungary, under the name of Poszonyi! I would say, that Bratislava is like a capuccino: 3 in 1!

Visiting ghost towns is for some travelers the favorite way of spending vacations, and a must for any experienced travelers. It is fascinating to visit a ghost towns and ask all possible questions about the people living there in the blossom times of those settlements. Sometimes is really fascinating to speculate about the possible reasons of the decay of the ghost towns (natural disasters; climate change; foreign occupations and lost wars; economic decay etc). There are many Ghost Towns around the world. Some of them were ruling places of wonderful civilizations (Roman, Inca, Maya etc); some of them are much newer and are no more than 2 centuries old ( Gold Rushes from Far West, Australia and Alaska created a few interesting Ghost Towns).

Riga, as the capital and biggest city of Latvia, had a very interesting history. The city was grounded in the XIIth century by German immigrants and soon became a full member of Hansa, a German association of the most important Baltic ports ( other members were Hamburg, Rostock, Bremen etc). Riga continued its ascension and blossomed again by the end of XIXth century, due to a strong German and Jewish community.

Cathedral Square in Riga
The XXth century was not good at all for Riga, as the city was almost uninterruptedly under foreign occupation. First came the Germans during the WWII and destroyed the Jewish minority to extinction. Then came the Soviets, which have brutally ruled for 50 years. Through mass deportations, planned economy etc they reached an unprecedented record: the Latvian majority of population became actually a minority! More amazing: they still preserved a national conscience and they claimed an independent Latvia, which they get today!
