Cairns is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia, and although is has no particular historic landmarks or areas of outstanding natural beauty itself, it is close to two of the most important World Heritage sites in Australia, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, and these sites are easily accessible from Cairns, thanks to the organized and reliable transport links and the excellent city airport, which has international and domestic services.

Cairns beach was destroyed years ago by gradual erosion, (initially caused by early over development of the coastal areas), but the rich tourist trade in recent times meant that the city was able to afford to build an artificial seawater lagoon area in 2003 to replace it. This beautiful area combined with the many excellent shops, cafes, bars and restaurants has improved Cairns as a destination in its own right, and you will find plenty to see and do here during your stay.
