If you want to understand El Zocalo like an insider, then you should know some facts about it. Namely the followings, listed bellow.
First of all, travelling for the first time at Mexico City, probably by air to he Benito Juarez airport, you can see shortly from the plane the mexican flag. There is Zocalo, or Plaza de la Constitucion, also known before as Plaza de Armas.

The name Zocalo stays for the english plynth. Here should be builded a statue in the XIXth century, but only the plynth rose.
Zocalo is huge, it is one of the world’s biggest squares. It has been builded by the spaniards in the XVIth century, on the ruins of the demolished Templo Mayor, the heart of the aztec capital of Tenochitlan. There are plenty of archaeological sites in the neighborhood, and some of them unveil even earlier civilisations than aztecas.

Mexico City is the second megacity of our planet, after Tokyo. 25 millions people from Area metropolitana call Mexico City home. To make a comparation: all the scandinavian coutries put together reach not 25 millions people!

Mexico City is huge and is expanding daily and florishes. It is the country’s most important economic and financial hub, easy to imagine. It is also a megacity of contrasts:
-it is an expansive city, but you can also live on budget here;
-between all the megacities of our world,it is maybe the worst located megacity of our planet( a valley surrounded by mountains at 2300 m, which makes ventilation impossible)
-it is generally a safe place, but you should avoid Tepito, where drugs addicted and drug smuggler deal all day long. Especially if you don’t speak spanish, you can count with hard times
I think, you simply need to travel somewhere! Try the following destinations:
1. Mexico City. See a megacity with all its emerging problems, maybe the world’s biggest!
2.Bolivia, the death road. Only if you are an incurable adventurer and are strong enough not to look below!
3. Barcelona. A very nice city indeed, the capital af Catalunya. Compare it with Madrid, if you saw already it!
4.Tansania. A good oportunity for safari. And much more than that.
5.United Arab Emirates. Pure opulent luxury due to the oil and to the smart investments.
