With Thanksgiving just a few days away and Christmas just around the corner, maybe now’s the time to start planning that epic new years trip to Las Vegas. If you’ve never been, the new years’ celebration is truly a spectacle – massive fireworks displays exploding from the hotel roof tops, hoards of drunken people invading the strip, and one of the greatest NYE celebrations in America. Vegas’ annual celebration of the new year attracts over 300,000 people every year, which means there’s plenty of options for having a great time if you don’t want to brave it out on the strip.
First tip: book NOW. With over 300,000 invading the city, the best hotel rooms are sure to book up fast. Check the usual suspects to try to find the lowest price, but remember it’s NYE – ‘cheap’ now might be ‘expensive’ next week, with most hotel rooms in the $200 – $00 range. The later you wait, the higher it’s going to go. However, staying far away from the strip might not be the best idea depending on your game plan.
One of the best things about this NYE party, and one which causes motorists countless headaches, is that the strip is closed to automobiles. You’ll need to get around via one of Vegas’ many great public transit options, such as the monorail, or attempt to walk down the strip. You can take a taxi, but leave early as the roads around the casinos are sure to get crammed. Plan ahead, because you don’t want to be stuck in traffic at midnight.
This is true even if you’re not planning on spending midnight on the strip. If being outside is not your thing, Vegas’ still has plenty of options for you. There are plenty of bars, shows, and restaurants open that day, and let’s not forget one of the city’s main attractions: it’s clubs. Every major casino will have at least one club or lounge, but getting in tonight won’t be like a regular saturday night. Tickets for these club events sell out fast, so purchase your tickets in advance if you’re planning on going to a club on new years’.
Oh yeah, another damper in your plans – towards peak times, say 10-11pm, some hotels will restrict access to guests in an effort to reduce the amount of congestion inside the hotel. But don’t worry, you can openly drink on the strip, so take the party with you wherever you go.
The New Year’s Party in Vegas is definitely a spectacle to behold, but prepare yourselves – it’s a journey and a half. Plan well in advance, go early, and bring lots of money – your guide to a successful Vegas new year.

Great tips. Here’s a couple more:
1. Not only will hotels restrict entry to only guests during the evening, but they also let guests (only) park in their parking garages on New Years Eve.
2. If you are driving from downtown or staying off-the-Strip, the new “best kept parking secret” for this year:
CityCenter is now open, which means that the Harmon bridge over I-15 is now open. Park in the industrial area around Polaris and Harmon and just take the short walk across I-15 to the middle of the action:

Forget about the taxi option, or the bus option, if you want to get somewhere on or near the Las Vegas strip between 9pm and 3am on New Year’s Eve. How is a cab going to get to you to pick you up if all the streets are closed? If you do get into a cab, how is it going to drive any where? – sit there and watch the meter spin.
Plan on staying close to your hotel. period. It is cold – near freezing – at midnight on New Year’s Eve. No easy access to restrooms or food. Don’t just wing it – plan it. Make reservations to be somewhere.
