Its story started in 1705, when a few Spaniards, lead by the Duke of Albuquerque, grounded a little village on the banks of Rio Grande. In 1900 Albuquerque was one of the fastest growing cities in America, and still holds on! The city proudly counts 900 000 inhabitants, enjoying a warm, but pleasant weather. The people there are mostly very friendly, welcoming the guests.
First of all, visit the city and get familiar with it. It is very nice, unsophisticated and casual. With trousers and sandals you are already one of the locals. Visit Old Town and New Town, and the best way to do it is by bike. Take a break on Rio Grande banks at Tingley beach and after that a portion of culture at KiMo Theatre, a renowned landmark. Make a pedestrian trip up to Sandia Peak, where you can even ski in the winter, despite the huge surprise you will experience. Although, you can even skate in the middle of summer in Albuquerque, at the heart of desert ( The Outpost Ice Arena has four skate rinks under the same roof).
Discover the rich Indian Pueblo culture and also the amazing Spanish culture. You have a lot of things to do, to see and to discover in Albuquerque, New Mexico. And perhaps the only thing you can’t get even is the food! There is no problem if you choice a traditional non New Mexican food. But if you have the normal desire to taste the local New Mexican food you are a dead man! Whatever you order, the waiter will ask you the same question: “Red or green?” (he can even say it in Spanish “Verde o rojo?”). This is the bite, don’t buy it! They mean the chili, and whatever answer you give, will be hotter than you expected and much hotter than you can digest. Your lips, tongue and stomach will enjoy if you give the simple wise normal answer :”Sorry, none”, but no one coming from outside answers like that. O.K., try it, but I am not responsible for any consequences.
But the most important and exciting thing to do in Albuquerque is taking part to the amazing Balloon Fiesta, organized every year starting with the first Sunday in October. Yes, you can still make your schedule in order to catch it, but don’t bother trying to book a room at any city hotel. They are already overbooked for that period with a few months before! Because the show is incredible for real, and you will understand why is the most attended yearly American festival. Every balloon has a particular form and color, making from this reunion an unforgettable event. Balloon Fiesta was first time organized in Albuquerque due to the desert conditions, which make the ascension easier and more predictable. Though, sometimes is quite impossible to get the desired smooth ascension for many participants. The Balloon Fiesta lasts for one week, and during this week three times are organized mass ascension early in the morning, due to favorable ascending currents ( be careful not to miss it, you must wake up at dawn!)
