The prestigious winners of the world class Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) Airline of the Year Award for 2009 were named recently and it was a pleasant surprise for Tony Fernandes, CEO for AirAsia and AirAsia X when both the airlines were deemed joint winners. Fernandes, who hails from Malaysia, was also presented with the CAPA Legend Award (Aviation Hall of Fame).

AirAsia started off as a humble 2-plane budget airline company providing short haul flights within Malaysia. When they first started out, they quickly delighted 200,000 passengers with their highly affordable fares and top notch service. Within 7 short years, they quickly expanded to include the long haul flights provider AirAsia X and they can now boast to have served a grand total of 75 million passengers! The ever familiar red AirAsia logo, spiffy uniforms and friendly staff became a pride of the nation and gained global recognition in a short span of time. The year before saw AirAsia winning the CAPA New Airline of the Year award but with the triple wins this year, AirAsia aims to expand its reach worldwide even more aggressively.

The budget airline plans to introduce lie-flat bed seats from the year 2010 onwards as well as flights to other holiday destinations around the world.
