Barcelona is a city known for its diversity of people and cultures. Barcelona’s cuisine is also very diverse, with creative influences from all over the world. Because of its unique geographical landscape and weather, fresh and seasonal ingredients are available year-round.
Barcelona is in the Catalan region of Spain. Recently, the Catalan region has become known for producing some of the best-trained chefs in the country. The legendary restaurant El Bulli, located just a few hours outside Barcelona, has been regarded as one of the top three restaurants in the world. Its head chef, Ferram Adria, has been able to take his small restaurant into the culinary spotlight and put Catalan’s cuisine on the map.
One of the staples of Catalan cooking is its use of many sauces for its meat and fish dishes. The traditional “Allioli”, an oil and garlic based dressing is very common ingredient that can be found in nearly every restaurant and kitchen in Barcelona
If there were one staple ingredient that stands out in Catalan food it would be olive oil. Olive oil from Barcelona is as just of high of a quality as any fine Italian or South American made oils. Bread is also very traditional with Catalan cuisine. In fact, a very simple lunch of fresh bread, oil, wine and cheese is quite common in Barcelona.
Catalan food can trace its roots, as most cultures do, to travel and immigration. Arabian travelers would often travel through the Catalan region, introducing the locals to new and exotic preparations and ingredients from their homelands along the way. Rabbit with pears is a traditional Catalan dish that uses this Moorish flavor combination of sweet, sour and savory in an interesting and delicious way.
