The variety of foods found in Brazil is as varied as its culture and people. In some ways Brazilian food is similar to our own American fare. Obviously there are geographical differences in the local ingredients, but just as America has become a melting pot of people and foods, so too has Brazil. Many of Brazil’s popular dishes are variations of indigenous dishes brought there by foreign immigrants.

The national dish of Brazil is a filling stew of black beans and pork called Feijoada. It includes various pork cuts such as sausage, knuckles, and ears and is served on rice and collard greens. This dish alone shows the diversity of cuisine in Brazil, with influences in African, Spanish, and Mediterranean food.

Brazil’s climate is exceptionally beneficial for year round production of bountiful fruits and vegetables and its large sea line provides a variety of seafood and fresh fish. For hungry travelers this means that even a meal at a high end gourmet restaurant will be relatively inexpensive, even in the busiest times of the year. For the more adventurous traveler, you can sound the morning fishing or harvesting lobsters on a locally hired boat, and have your catch cooked at a nearby coastal restaurant. Commercial kitchens are required by Brazilian law to be open and visible to the public, and the chefs are typically friendly and accommodating. This also means that Brazilian restaurants are typically very clean as they in open view.

Large buffets are another western influence that is popular in Brazil. Buffets, called “Rodizio” are considered all you can eat, while “Porquilo” means that you pay by the plate or by the pound. Keep this in mind when making a selection for lunch or dinner.

Travelers to Brazil are in for a rare treat. Locally made foods and drinks, music and dancing is a nightly affair, and there are several travel resorts catering to many kinds of budgets. Thrifty travelers can find Airfare and resort package deals available on the Internet and travel agencies. Dining out is inexpensive as well, and with the huge amount of fabulous produce and seafood available on the coast, finding a great meal is as simple as walking along the beach.
