If I were to tell you that Chinese food is one of the healthiest meal choices you can make, you’d probably look at me like I’m crazy. However lots of people have a misunderstanding as to what real Chinese food actually is. Traditionally, the Chinese people eat a lot more plain rice, with some fish, even smaller amounts of meat and lots of vegetables. Americanized Chinese food is extremely unhealthy and includes mostly dishes that are heavy in fatty meat and contain more sodium than any other take-out food you can find. Luckily, there are a couple of things you can do to make relatively healthy choices when ordering Chinese.

 

Avoid Deep-Fried Foods

If you were to actually go to China, you’d be heard pressed to find General Tso’s anything and ordering deep fried sweet and sour chicken will only get you confused looks. Authentic Chinese food is rarely deep-fried. Unfortunately the American palate has become very friendly to deep fried foods. Typical take-out Chinese fried foods are made with an amazing amount of empty carbohydrates and tons of sodium. If you avoid ordering anything deep fried from Chinese takeout not only will your meal be much healthier, but it will actually be more authentic, It is actually a lot easier than you think to replace fried options for healthy ones. For example, instead of ordering fried egg rolls, order some steamed dumplings…they’re delicious! 

Order More Vegetables

A lot of the calories in Chinese take-out is the meat. Even when not deep-fried there are still ways to make your dishes healthier.  Most Chinese restaurants offer various vegetarian or meat substitute dishes. Prepared the right way, tofu is absolutely delicious and is a great way to cut about 100 calories out of every meal. Even if you don’t want to cut out all the meat, try asking the restaurant to use only half the meat and more vegetables.

You don’t have to go all the way to China to find healthier and more authentic Chinese food in America. By avoiding the deep fried junk and packing on the veggies, you can enjoy healthy Chinese food the way it was always intended to be.
