Whether it’s a simple dish of grilled vegetables or a highly complex and delicate pastry dish, Greek cuisine is as colorful and diverse as the legendary history of Greece itself. Simple Greek fare of rural villages and farms has merged with complex flavors and ingredients of the big cities to make up the wonderful variety of Greek food available today. Greece is becoming just as famous for its diversity of cuisine as it is for its historically fascinating past. Although there are hundreds of indigenous ingredients to Greece, ingredients alone do not make up Greek food. Traditional preparation, fresh ingredients and flavors and Greek ingenuity are all required to make a truly Greek dish worthy of recognition.
Meze
This is the Greek version of cocktail food. A Meze course would accompany drinks and cocktails, usually associated with bars and taverns. These are no simple popcorn and pizza snacks however. Most Meze tasting menus include multiple indigenous Greek dishes, scaled down to one or two small bite appetizers. Several of these dishes can make up a “Meze course” much like a tasting menu paired with wine. Greek versions of antipasto, wrapped or stuffed fruits, soups, grilled meats, kabobs, and homemade yogurts are typical Meze courses.
Classical Greek Recipes
Every kitchen in Greece is going to give you a different version of “classical Greek” cuisine. Greek food is just as diverse as its culture and people. Sometimes it can be as simple as a sliced tomato and cheese, while other times it can be complex, such as Moussaka with eggplant dish. Here are some typical Greek dishes hungry travelers will enjoy.

Gyros seems to be the most popular Greek dish in the world. Every bigger town has a restaurant serving gyros or some version of it.
