Almost all modern culinary techniques and dishes can be traced back to one of a few founding cultures including Asia, France, Spain and a handful of others. Spain especially has a very unique and interesting history. Spain is one of the oldest nations in the world and its influences reach to nearly every culture on the planet. The name “Spain” actually comes from the original term “Hispania” or more commonly known as:”Hispanic”. The geography of Spain is full of vast mountain ranges and highlands, with many large rivers criss-crossing its terrain.
The differences in culture, geography, technology and regional ingredients, like most cultures are what make Spanish cuisine unique. One of the main influences on Spanish food is seafood. Several varieties of fresh seafood are abundant all over Spain thanks to its many rivers. There are as many techniques and procedures for cooking traditional Spanish seafood dishes as there are varieties of fish found in its many rivers. Even though there are differences in specific dishes all over Spain, the indigenous ingredients and spices are common throughout the country.
Spain is also the largest exporter of Saffron in the world. 80% of all Saffron consumed in restaurants is indigenous Spanish crocus saffron. Spain’s warm climate and consistent humidity level create a perfect environment for Saffron harvesting. Saffron is also the most expensive spice in the world at more than three hundred dollars an ounce. The Spanish Paella is a seafood stew that uses Saffron, lobster, rice and regional fish in a tasty broth
Spanish cuisine has becomes extremely popular all over the world. Because of its variety of tastes and textures its no wonder why its becomes such a hit. Even finicky eaters will find it hard to resist the colors and flavors of this unique style of food.
