Do you know, by chance, what is Algarve? If you still don’t know what is Algarve, than I will unveil it to you.

First of all, Algarve is not a resort. Algarve is a 200 km long seaside in the south of Portugal. Over there are many resorts and entertainment posibilities. Algarve is maybe comparable to the spanish Costa Brava and Costa Dorada, without being so overcrowded. For the Portuguese Algarve means district de Faro, but I prefer the much more poetical name of Algarve.
Algarve is a hilly district, and its wonderful beaches are not only sandy beaches, there are also rocky beaches, and in some places consist the danger of falling rocks. So beware of falling stones, whether on the beach or by climbing or hiking muntains.

Algarve had a trembled fascinating history. In many places you can see roman ruins, and in many places you can discover muslim influences in the architecture, as Algarve stayed up to the XIIIth century under Moor occupation.
The people of Algarve and its kitchen are sea oriented. You can eat in Algarve a lot of fish and shellfish, deliciously cooked. My tip: don’t let the fish dishes drying, use the portuguese wines of Porto and Madera, and even the local wines from Lagos in Algarve. If you are so lucky and visit Algarve on Christmas, Eastern or Spring, during the local festivals, you will be pleased to discover not only old exceptional dishes and receipes, but also a rich etnographical heritage. On these local festivals you have also the oportunity to buy for bargain prices local arts and crafts, made from woven fabric, pottery, palm fibers or cork.

Portugal is undoubtfully the world’s leader in cork production, as here raise the cork oak. In Algarve there is a Cork Route to follow, leading to Rio Formosa. Along this Cork Route you can see many cork farms and some cork plants. The cork processing needs a lot of patience and takes a few weeks for cork to dry natural.
In the last 50 years Algarve discovered tourism, and tourism also discovered Algarve. Due to its mild climate and friendly locals, many pensioneers (mainly from Britain) came and settled in Algarve, as the life quality is one of the highest throughout Europe. Thus the real estate exploded in Algarve, and even the price of holiday timesharing rose much.If you understand now already the word “Praia” (beach) note that you have outnumbered beaches in Algarve. I selected from all these beaches Praia do Amado in Aljezur, Praia do Camilo in Lagos and Praia do Faro, as Faro is the chief city in Algarve.
You can practise in Algarve all possible water sports or you can lie relaxed in the sun, it is only your choice. You can play golf, climb mountains, make balloon trips etc. For dining out there are many smart restaurants, and my recommendation is the Restaurant Amore Pizza E Pasta, serving also traditional portuguese dishes.
For the environmentalists(we should be all environmentalists), and wild life freaks remember some magic words: Costa Vicentina National Park. Here have you even posibilities for bird watching.
Did you book already? Today, the 30.th December, the water temperature is 15 degrees Celsius. If you are strong enough, you can already swim. If not, better wait another 2 months.
