Argentina is a vast and beautiful country with diverse landscapes, which range from tropical rainforests through to sub zero mountain glaciers. As well as its natural beauty, the country is also renowned for its rich and vibrant culture, and its passionate Latin American spirit.

Argentina also has some fantastic city landscapes for visitors to explore, including the bustling capital Buenos Aires, which is a beautiful mix of old colonial architecture and modern design. This is an excellent place to visit during your Argentina holiday, as Buenos Aires has a welcoming cosmopolitan vibe, and there are plenty of places to shop, eat out and relax with friends.

Here are a few tips that will help your Argentina holiday to run more smoothly:
* Language – Spanish is the official language of Argentina, but English is also spoken in many popular tourist destinations. It is helpful if you learn a few basic Spanish words though, especially if you are travelling to any rural or remote parts of the country
* Health – there is a low risk of illnesses like typhoid, malaria and yellow fever, especially in the tropical areas, so it is a good idea to have the relevant inoculations and take preventive medications. It is important that you avoid contact with mosquitoes as much as possible, as there is a risk of contracting dengue fever from their bites, and there is no effective treatment for this currently available. Water is generally safe to drink in large towns and cities, but take bottled water is you are visiting any remote areas. There are good medical facilities in the cities, but treatment can be very expensive so you will need good medical insurance to cover you whilst you are away against any potential health problems. Many large cities in South America are heavily polluted, and Argentinean cities are no exception so if you suffer from allergies you will need to ensure you have packed plenty of the necessary medication.

* Safety – travelling around Argentina is generally safe, but this is a country in the middle of political and economic change, so there are occasional trouble hotspots. Check the news for any disturbances before and during your Argentina holiday, and avoid any areas that are expecting rallies or large public gatherings. Buenos Aires and other large cities have the usual trouble with pick pockets and bag snatchers, so always keep a close eye on your belongings and avoid carrying around too much cash. Also be aware that there are many unlicensed taxi firms working in the main cities, which can charge excessive fares and have been known the employ aggressive tactics to get passengers to pay up. Avoid any taxis that do not have the registered yellow license plates and ID badges, and those without any company logos on the side.
* Communication – Argentina has international telephone connections, and if you are calling home whilst here on holiday the outgoing code is 00, followed by the country code (for example UK is 0044). There are also plenty of Internet cafes, and most large hotels offer Internet access points for visitors to use, but check the usage rates as this can sometimes be very expensive. Postal systems are average for this part of the world, and you will probably arrive home before your postcards if you are only staying for a couple of weeks.
