Vilnius is a very old town, and one of the traditionally biggest and most influent cities of the Northern Europe. Its name comes from the River Vilna, on whose banks Vilnius proudly sits since the XIIIth century. Vilnius counts 500 000 inhabitants and this year is a special one for Vilnius: it was chosen the European Cultural Capital 2009, together with the Austrian city of Linz.

Along the centuries Vilnius met more periods of flourishing, but also very tough times. Vilnius has been occupied whether by the Russians, or by the Poles, or by the Swedish. During World War I and World War II Vilnius was occupied by German troops. In the XVIIth century Vilnius suffered 5 destructive fires, and also the bubonic plague hit the city, killing 20 000 people. After all these sad events Vilnius came back to life, showing a lot of character.

In the XIXth and XXth century half of the Vilnius population was made up by Jews. The city was called Jerusalem, counted fiercely 100 synagogues and organized schools for the study of the Jewish holly books. Most of these Jews died during the WWII in the Holocaust.

Vilnius suffered interesting and dramatic changes in its population structure: by the census from 1916 only 2% of the population declared to be Lithuanian; 90 years later were already 50 %. But the city is not amazing and interesting only through these facts!

The modern Vilnius was fully rebuilded in some of its quarters, but still preserves in other ones the magic of the past. Start your visit in Vilnius to Ausros Vartai, which is actually a city gate hosting in the first stairs a cathedral. The icon Mary hanging here is wondermaking, and could be the chance of your life! Continue the visit by walking in the historic Vilnius downtown, which is really amazing.  Go further to the University of Vilnius, which is very old and very renowned worldwide. The University is a wonderful example of Gothic architecture and has 13 patios (inside yards). You can also find to the University the impressive KGB Museum, documenting the Independence fight and the huge number of victims.

Afterwards visit the Old Cityhall, and the front lying market, which is the biggest in Vilnius. Here take place most of the cultural events hosted by Vilnius as one of The 2009 European Culture Capital. In this area you can solve very quickly and easy the problem of the sleeping place in Vilnius. Two of the city’s best hotels are here : one of them is Radisson SAS Astoria hotel, and the other  Shakespeare Boutique Hotel. Or maybe you are going to prefer The Stikliai Hotel, which has the nicest glass covered patio from Vilnius.

Eating and drinking will surely not be a serious issue during your stay in Vilnius. The local Lithuanian kitchen consist mainly on herring, hen and Zepelinai ( a dish based on potatoes. Ask it in Restaurant Zemaiciai, is delicios). Drink vodka all night long debating all possible problems and partying in Uzupio Kavine, a magnificent terrace in the Artist’ Republic of Uzupis!
