There are only a few urban places in the world that inspire such passion and devotion as the historic city of Jerusalem. This city is considered to be the cradle of at least three major religions, and the focal point of centuries of important religious events, and is dominated by key historical buildings, holy sites and museums. Jerusalem is also a modern city, and a large district is dominated by shops and leisure facilities. Jewish West Jerusalem has a number of attractive, broad avenues and leafy squares, which bustle with cafes, restaurants and bakeries. East Jerusalem has predominantly been an Arab district over the years, and to this day is crowded with vibrant bazaars and street markets.

The Old City is where most of the major sights are situated, and this is on the eastern boundary of the Jerusalem. The Old City is enclosed in magnificent stonewalls that date back to the 16th Century, and have labyrinthine streets that wind in and around each other. This area is divided in four sections, and named after the four main ethnic communities that made their homes there, Arab, Jewish, Christian and Armenian. Even to this day the four sections remain distinct, and as you pass through each community the differences are startling. One moment you are in a peaceful Armenian garden, and then next you have turned a corner and are in the middle of a vibrant Arab bazaar. This separatism may seem unusual to visitors, but when you understand the strong underlying tensions running through the Old City of Jerusalem, this separate way of living makes more sense. For Jewish inhabits Jerusalem is the most sacred and revered holy site in their religion, as it was original the site of an ancient Jewish temple, (over 3,000 years ago which stood in the time Jesus was said to have lived) which was destroyed by the Romans. The Wailing Wall at the foot of the temple site is all that now remains, and is an important place of prayer and pilgrimage. For those of the Christian and Orthodox faiths the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is one of the most important religious sites, as it is said to enclose the site of the Crucifixion of Jesus and also his tomb. For Muslims, the Dome of the Rock on Temple Mount and the Al-Aqsa mosque beside it have been proclaimed the third holiest shrine in all of Islam. When all these religion come together, in a place where they all have sacred sites of worship there is bound to be tensions and issues, so it makes sense that communities living in the old city prefer to stick together.
