I was recently in Barcelona, and a great alternative to staying in a hotel or hostel is renting an apartment. I thought it was going to be expensive, but ended up being cheaper than staying in a hotel. It had all the things I needed, and it was nice to use the kitchen to make my own meals. It was also in a great part of town! I recommend staying with Barcelona-home, that is where I stayed and I do not regret it!
