Many people around the country are making the commitment to eat healthier. They are shopping organically, cutting out sugars and loading up on the fruits and veggies. Getting a healthy eating routine started at home and work is easy and will help you lose a lot of unwanted pounds. The first major obstacle in a healthy diet is traveling.

Although it’s most likely possible to make a decent Cesar salad out of your briefcase, most travelers aren’t going to go to these extremes. Unless you are visiting friends and family, all of your meals are going to be at a restaurant or cafe, making it hard for even the most dedicated people to stay true to their diets.

Airports are one of the last places a traveler is going to find a healthy meal. Most airports are packed with fast food outlets, unhealthy chain restraints, and prepackaged foods at the airport convenience store. The worst part about airports, as most of us know, is that once we’ve finally gotten through the long security lines, we’re pretty much forced to buy anything we need from the airport, paying their inflated prices.

There are a few things a healthy traveler can do to avoid the unhealthy foods offered at an airport.

It’s important to plan ahead. Travelers are spending more time than ever in airports, sometimes missing one or more meals a day. If you are going to be traveling for more than a few hours its a good idea to pack a small snack or meal. This will give you the choice to eat what you want, and will also relieve you of paying outrageous airport prices. Keep everything in sealed Tupperware or plastic bags. Its important to call ahead to the airline to check on any restrictions the airline might have regarding food on board.

Here are some wonderful healthy alternatives to typical airport fare.

Celery and Carrot sticks with dressing – These are now sold in small, resalable packages.

Apples, Oranges, Bananas

Trail mix- making your own at home is easy and inexpensive.

Peanuts – You cant even get a bag of these on the plane anymore!

High quality chocolate – For any “sweet tooth” emergencies that might come up.
