Bucharest is the capital of Romania and an ancient city, located on the banks of a tributary to the great Danube, the Dâmbovita River. This attractive city has many restored neoclassical buildings and wide leafy boulevards and there are some wonderful parks and gardens including Cismigiu Gardens and Herastrau Park. Bucharest also has three natural lakes (Floreasca, Tei and Colentina), which are surrounded by excellent recreational facilities.

Bucharest has had a rich and varied history, and there is a wealth of diverse architecture on offer, from to Byzantine chapels right through to dreary communist grey apartment blocks, which were regrettably built over the top of some of Bucharest’s medieval architectural treasures. Fortunately a few buildings from the Middle Ages have survived including the ruins of the Curtea Veche (the Old Court of the King or the Old Princely Court), which was built as a domestic residence for the monarchs during Vlad III Dracula’s rule in the 15th Century.

There are many things to see and do in Bucharest, from visiting historic buildings and monuments to going out for a wild night on the town, and the climate is mild most of the year, but it is important to note it can get very hot in the height of the summer and most hotels and public buildings do not have air conditioning. Public transport is cheap and reliable, and the metro service is the easiest way to get around the city (www.metrorex.ro). Taxis are to be avoided though as they are not well regulated, and are well known for overcharging their passengers. If you need to get a taxi make sure you book one through a reliable company such as Cobalcescu or Meridian, or if you are in a hotel ask the reception desk to make a booking for you. Also to avoid: Hotel Ibis Accor, who hires an INTERNET cable for 6 Euros, while a mew one costs only 4 when you buy it!

National Museum for contemporary art is one of the main atractions in Bucharest

The National Museum of Contemporary Art occupies the new glass wing of the impressive Palace of the Parliament, and has exhibitions showcasing work by contemporary Romanian artists such as
Paul Neagu (1938-2004) and Ion Nicodim (1935).

Muzeul National de Arta
The National Art Museum suffered a severe set back in 1989 when it was looted and vandalised during a time of extreme political upheaval, but it has now been carefully restored and has some world class exhibits, including excellent examples of work from prominent artists such as Von Eyck, Rubens, El Greco and Rembrandt, which are held in the Gallery of European Art section. The Gallery of Romanian Art is also very good, and has works by famous Romanian artists including Nicolae Grigorescu, who studied as a young man at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and travelled with the Romanian army during the Romanian War of Independence, where he recorded his experiences in a number of sketches, paintings and drawings.
