Swine Flu originated in Mexico, and the first cases were reported worldwide in April 2009. The World Health Organisations acted quickly to assess the risks that this virulent strain of influenza represented, and although the virus outbreak has now been officially labelled ‘pandemic’ (affecting other countries around the world), there have been a low percentage of cases reported worldwide, and no fatalities as yet outside of Mexico.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) have advised against all non-essential business and leisure travel, and people leaving the country are scanned at the airport for obvious flu like symptoms, although of course many passengers could be carrying the virus without displaying any symptoms at all. WHO are not restricting travel completely to and from Mexico and other affected countries, as this has been shown to have no affect on containing influenza type viruses.

Advice for people travelling in Swine Flu affected areas (North America, South America, Australia, Grand Britain)
If you are already in Mexico, or must travel there on an essential trip then there are a number of ways you can reduce the risk of contracting and transmitting the Swine Flu virus including:
* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue you cough or sneeze, and carefully dispose of used tissues immediately.
* Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water to reduce the risk of picking viral germs and transmitting them to other people or surfaces.
* Clean hard surfaces frequently, concentrating on areas that see high usage such as door handles, kitchen worktops and bathrooms.
* Avoid potentially crowded areas such as public transport, and maintain a distance of no less than six feet from other people whenever possible.
* If you are caring for a person who is sick with Swine Flu, then wear a mask and take extra precautions to wash your hands and any utensils, linens etc that they use.
* If you are not sick you do not have to wear a mask, but you will probably see many people wearing one as an extra precaution in public areas. The germs are transmitted person-to person or by contaminated surfaces, and are not airborne, unless someone sneezes or coughs very close to you.

What should I do if I contract the Illness while Travelling?
If you fall sick whilst you are away, you should stay in your accommodation, keep away from work/public places and avoid contact with people until you are better. Contact local health services to inform them you are ill, and if you do not have this information then you can contact your national embassy for more advice (British Nationals in Mexico can call the Embassy on (01 55) 5242 8500 for further healthcare information). Take it easy and drink plenty of fluids, making sure to wash your hands and hard surfaces regularly, and dispose of any used tissues carefully.

What should I do if I feel ill when I return from suspect countries?
If you have recently returned from countries affected by swine flu and start to feel flu like symptoms (such as headache, runny nose, painful joints and limbs, sore throat and fever), then you need to confine yourself to home, avoid work and contact your local healthcare provider immediately. Explain that you have recently returned from a trip, and that you have symptoms that may be linked to influenza A (H1N1) (swine flu).
