Dubai is a very modern, even futuristic, city. But in Dubai, near a modern economy, you can discover a very old culture, which is really amazing.
I made a short list of my favorites things to do in Dubai, and here you are:
1.Visiting Dubai is the best opportunity to see alive its magnificent hotels, Burj al Arab (the only one worldwide ranked with 7 stars) and Atlantis The Palm. It is an experience, believe me.
2. Do not miss the occasion to take part to a safari desert. Driving a strong jeep on sand is an unique experience, a must for every newcomer in Dubai. Some offers include a night in desert, in a bedouin village, when you are going to sleep in a traditional tent, nevertheless modern fitted. You will be invited to a traditional barbecue, and do not mention anything about entertainment: the traditional belly dance! Very exciting and adventurous.
3. Sand skiing. A new experience, a hot one.
4. Indoor snow skiing – my favourite thing to do there, even if I am not to good at ski.
5.Surfing, beaching, swimming, snorkeling and other watersports are very common and easy to discover in Dubai.
6. Camel racing. An ancient sport, very popular even today. Racing camels are very expensive, and these races are scheduled to every national celebration.
7. Horse riding. In Dubai it is still to find a special bride of horse, the Arabics. They are very nice, very strong, but easy to master.
8.Taking golf courses is one of the most popular things to do in Dubai cause they are quite cheap.
9. Shopping in Dubai is very special. You can find world’s most diverse wares at very good and competitive prices. Dubai is in my opinion a world shopping capital, having a few world known malls with excellent prices.
10. Visit the Jumeirah Mosque from Dubai, is very spectacular and very modern. Usually a non-muslim may not inside this mosque; the only one exception is an guided tour.

Dubai is a false front, a playground for idiot visitors, and/or a place to make money (legal and illegal). A heaven for smugglers breaking international conventions, and filled with abused and underpaid foreign workers. Take a look behind the scenes..

One thing is for sure! Dubai is expensive for accommodation: the cheapest (and best) option is to stay with friends; next option is to stay around Deira (avg Dhs4-500 per night), it’s busy and a little away from the usual tourist things but cheap for hotels here; last option is to stay in the newer hotels/developments (Dhs1,000+ per night), but these are closer to the action. For activities a desert safari is good fun, try sand surfing and dune buggies, shopping go the Mall of The Emirates and The Madinat, if you are here for a Friday go to brunch at one of the big hotels, then there are the beaches if you want to top up your tan. Most hotels will have a long list of brochures with things to do. I have used a company called Blue Banana who were good, their number is +971 4436 8100 or http://www.bluebanana.ae Last of all do not come in Ramadan as lots of things close down, best time of year is from October to March. Good luck !

Oh and remember one of the things you can’t do in Dubai is sex on the beach! You will get busted

@Maria, you are absolutely right.
Dubai is a very hectic modern city. to understand daily life in Dubai, the most important character one needs is adaptability. currently Dubai is in middle of huge development phase…getting from one point to another is just impossible…public transport is under developed…they have world class infrastructure..but the demand outstrips the available infrastructure….parking is just impossible….the only way to avoid traffic is stay around the area of work i the morning…one needs to know Dubai is not a democratic place…every decision is based on what comes out of te ruling family and the federal national congress…foreigners has no say in decision and law making….then it depends a lot on where you are from…a very hypocritical society that closes eyes to all sorts of divides…does not practice equal cances to all…although they claim to be… some of the human abuses that happens to the unskilled labourers most from the sub continent can be compared to the worst in the world…the locals called emaratis are not directly responsible for this..but they convinently close the eyes…these high flyers does not even have a minimum wage program…there is no job security here for any one… dubai does have its benefits as well…can make loads of money…but the cost of life is too high….and the quality of life is really good..but the price is too high for this… one needs to be here to really understand dubai….it looks all glitz and glamour from outside…in the inside it is not all that rosy…. good luck with your experience in dubai..

Sra. o Srta. Maria,

One of the best things to enjoy Dubai is by having an experience flying with SEAWINGS using a SEAPLANE. Seawings offers aerial sight seeing tour around DUBAI where in you can view those artificial islands made. It was amazing. You will be able to think how they transformed this desert land into a very cool place. From the Bird’s Eye view, you will be able to see the palms, the world, the burj al arab, the burj dubai etc. My experience seeing the whole Dubai from the sky was phenomenal. Thanks to SEAWINGS for making it possible. Try to look at their website at http://www.seawings.ae. This is totally COOL!

Hello,
Most of the info here is very interesting and helpful. Me and my husband will be going to Dubai in January. We are staying at a good, fairly expensive, hotel. We want to relax and enjoy all the luxuries Dubai has to offer…or, all the ones we can afford.
I love belly dancing, does any one here has some advice on good shows we could go watch? Or any specific dancers that might be worth seeing?
Thank you all very much.
Maria.
By the way…Thank you Pepe for your input. When I read your letter I got even more hopeful.
