No one can explain or understand the huge number of Berlin visitors, comparing even with much bigger cities. No one can explain and understand the huge success and atractivity of Berlin among tourists of all ages, but this is the fact!
I can give you some explanations, according to my researches. Namely, Berlin has a wide offer for any kind of tourist, whether a wine afficionado, history and art lover, or party animal. Berlin has had a fascinating history with many crucial moments and was totally destroyed after WWII; besides the division of Berlin and the building of the Berlin Wall could cost the mankind a few times the third World War. Maybe is easier to understand now the syndrome of Berlinopatia present to almost all of its visitors: they wish desperately to come back, being mesmerized by this wonderful city.
As I am a Berlin afficionado myself, deadly hurt by Berlinopatia, I have some suggestions for you and your next trip to Berlin! They are simple, interesting, suitable for any kind of tourist, being based on very original, but unsophisticated ideas.
1. Der Badeschiff (The bathing ship) is a former river barge turned in a chic pool with Ibiza architecture. Also available in winter, when it is covered and the people still can swim. After sunrise there are special artistic shows given by notorious German and stranger professionals. E.g. : on the 15th of August a magnificent show will be possible to see. Under the name “Suck me now and fuck me latter” you will have the unique opportunity to see an excellent show, which is much more decent than you could think.
2. Die unsicht Bar (The invisible Bar) was very confusing for me the first time when I visited it, simply by accident. It was very dark, and I couldn’t understand why, as outside was high noon. I assumed first, that the owner did not payed his bills, but I was totally wrong. The bar has an excellent kitchen, but stays totally in dark, and you will enjoy your food through tasting, smelling and picking. You will understand why the blind people are much more eager and intelligent comparing to normal ones. Also a good opportunity to think to the French writer Antoine de Sainte Exupery, who said : ” Essential things are invisible to the eyes.”
3. The Memorial of the killed Jews ( Denkmal fuer die ermordeten Juden Europas) occupies a generous surface in Berlin Downtown, between Brandenburger Tor and Potsdamer Platz. It enjoys an interesting architecture and was opened to the public in 2005 during a touching and impressive ceremony, when even some Holocaust survivors came to see it.
4. Pergamonmuseum is doubtless one of the biggest and most important museums worldwide hosting many artifacts and masterpieces from the remoted or near past. Every Thursday between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m the entrance is free. Maybe the best way to visit Pergamonmuseum is to rent a recorded tape guiding you throughout the museum for a thoroughful visit of 4 unforgettable hours.
5. The Insomnia bar is nowadays one of the most fashioned in Berlin. But if you wanna go there you must forget all your inhibitions, as otherwise you will be deeply shocked. There is in Insomnia a strange lascive permissive atmosphere with straight, gays, lesbians, fetichists and voyeurists doing every imaginable thing on the dance floor or in the special designed rooms. No one, but absolutely none, will push to do anything against your wish, they even try to discourage some sort of things.

Thanks for this. I’ve only been to Berlin once but was very impressed. Not too expensive compared to other Euro capitals, loads to see and do and friendly locals !

[...] Berlin is totally a city to fall in love with. There are many parks and lakes in Berlin, and no one will charge for walking in the parks ; lying in the sun on some beaches is not for free anymore. But besides there are some very interesting places you can acces for free, and I think you must be aware of that and get more from your Berlin travel. [...]
