Why AT&T owns every phone service
Tags: at&t, calling abroad, international roaming, long distance calls, orange, phone service, vodafoneBy
I recently had the opportunity to review their services on my circuit to Holland [stories from my trip coming soon..] and ugh…they own every other network out there. More and more people travel now (contrary to US dollar going MIA) and an absolute necessity is communication with those who are home. The costs are reasonable, far better than what I have back home, where Orange and Vodafone rule the market, charging a lot for average services. They cover over 200 countries some of which I never knew they existed like Mayotte or Gambia, and 20+ cruise lines.

AT&T was amongst the seven first networks from the USA having appeared in 1983. Since 2007 they started a world wide coverage. During my stay in Holland I made a lot of phone calls and I can assure you, I never experienced a bad connection either being rush hour or during night time. I had coverage all over Holland, even in small villages way up in the mountains.
The 3G technology isn’t a mystery to any of us anymore, but it doesn’t work everywhere around the globe. This problem is yet to be fixed. What I do know is that the 3G experience was something new for me and I got the opportunity to try it thanks to AT&T. I was able to call my brother who lives in Belgium at the moment and see my new born nephew on the phone. In a few years we will be able to videocall anywhere around the world and even have lower prices when the technology advances.
How to do it:
1. Go here and make your itinerary. Then, click continue!
2. Enter your phone number and choose your device.
3. You’ll know be able to see coverage and rates for all the countries you selected and print a summary.
Questions and Answers about the service:
- Where can I get more information?
For more details on international roaming, you can go to att.com/wirelessinternational or call on AT&T’s toll number 1-866-246-4852. To sign up for the packages use 1-800-331-0500. Another resource would be their forum (http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/) or if procrastination is your first name, write here, and I’ll answer.
- If I am in country X and want to call someone else from country X, I pay extra?
- No, it’s a flat all-inclusive rate and that’s all you’re paying.
- If someone calls me from country X what happens?
They get charges as if they were calling someone in US.
Let’s recap AT&T’s strongest points:
- low prices
- coverage in all discovered countries
- excellent connection
- 3G technology
At the risk of sounding like an AT&T employee, they offer the best service when it comes to international roaming.

That is amazing but I am wondering how telephone companies alone, without expanding to other kinds of communication business these days survive.. There are a lot of cheaper alternatives that has no cost like skype, google talk, yahoo messenger and the likes.. yes, even though they are internet based, the phones these days are mobile and also hi tech.. just wondering…
Or, as the majority, the phone companies are also the ones backing the internets… that is one good plausible explanation.
Thanks for sharing the info by the way, although I live in Europe, this info might be helpful to me one day.

It is not very surprising. When I was back in university, i have done a study (case) about this att and it is pretty strong and very established. They can do much good to the market and if a company is already established, it cannot fear competition but on the contrary, can even crush it competitors.
Talking about the services you mentioned, although I have 3g phone, i never tried using it yet. I often use PC to communicate with image. The blackberry plan is white expensive huh? I love flat rates, but it is only advisable or advantageous if i am planning to make a lot of calls, right?

Ah, so they are partner with vodafone? I learned before that it also supports other telephone companies worldwide such as singtel (singapore) and pldt (philippines) among others.. well, that is in asia, i can only imagine the big partners att has in europe and america… that makes their service very competitive, diverse and great!
thanks for sharing.

AT&T is one of the best cell phones provider worldwide but I’m wondering, why Indonesia isn’t on their list of service???

I’m not surprised about A.T & T.’s Service, I have used them for many years and have always been able to rely on them in difficult situations where I absolutely had to get a phone call through.
I use them right now and have been doing so for about 15 years solid. Yes, I have strayed before with better offers to different Phone service providers. But A.T.&T. does a smart thing and keeps in touch with you, so when things start to unravel with the plan you have or they have a better offer, I change back, usually. I also use them for an Internet Service provider as well.
I am glad to hear that they are giving you good service. It’s nice to know when traveling.
