Okay. So you’re going to France and don’t have a clue how you’re going to communicate. Don’t panic. Really, don’t. You’re not the first person and will doubtfully be the last to ever plan a trip to France and not have a clue about how to get by. But it’s really not as hard as it seems. You don’t have to learn much, just enough to help you get by if you need to.
While you can easily go to any book store, or even online and purchase a translation book, it’s not that hard to learn a few key words and phrases that might help you get by on your vacation. At least, it shouldn’t be. But then again, what basic French phrases does one deem important?
A few basic French phrases that might come in handy while visiting France might include: please, thank you, hello, goodbye, directions, bathroom, transportation and maybe even some menu items. It probably wouldn’t hurt to know the words hospital, emergency and police. Sure, you probably don’t like to think you might find yourself in a situation to need those words, but wouldn’t you rather be safe than sorry? Of course, if you can think of any other basic French phrases that you think you might need, by all means, learn them.
Don’t be foolish and think that you won’t be in France long enough to learn any basic French phrases. You might even think that you won’t be there long enough to make it really necessary. But that’s not true. It is a common courtesy, in fact. Don’t you prefer for people to know something about your language when they come to your country? Even if they speak your language doesn’t mean they would not prefer to speak in their own language. Don’t you? So try to be considerate and try to learn at least a few basic French phrases. It might go a long way to getting the help you need.
If you have time prior to leaving on your French getaway, you might look into purchasing (or renting) an audio of French phrases and words. Or even taking a class. The more you know, the better off you are. But that is the case in anything. Remember when learning a new language that some words resemble others very closely. Be careful not to learn any phrases that could result in offending someone.
In the end, if you have some basic French phrases that you can add to your repertoire of words, it can only be hopeful. It is much better to know the words and find them to be an unnecessary addition to your vocabulary than to need them and not know them. And if you really can’t recall a word or basic French phrase, or really can’t communicate your needs or wants very well, don’t worry. Most of the French do speak more than one language and they are usually very willing to help a foreigner out.
