I have seen endless websites promoting vacation packages, travel deals, and other Puerto Rico vacation related information, but no matter how hard I try, I can’t seem to find a detailed guide on the best places for a Puerto Rico getaway. It could be argued that anywhere there is a great place to go, and it’s a point I am willing to concede, but in my own experience, there are a few destinations that are well ahead of the rest.

While your ideal Puerto Rico vacation will rely heavily on what it is you are wanting to do while you are there, I am here to offer a list of my favorite cities, and what I think everyone should do there.

* Isabela – Still a rather wild area in many ways, the best of this city are to be found along it’s coast, not within it’s streets. Isabela is a fantastic place for surfing, and while there are several areas that hold great surfing beaches, the Jobos is special, not to mention much more unpopulated then what you might find in Rincon.

It is also known for it’s cycling, with great roads, paths, and trails that are fantastic for a bike ride around the city, or along the coastal line. You can rent a bike at a number of shops, located on practically every corner, and for an affordable price.

Once you have had your fill of cycling, and playing around on the beach, head on down to Happy Belly’s, located at Rte 4466, where you can spend the night singing karaoke with other tourists, as well as tone deaf locals. It may be a little heard on the ears, but it’s a great time.

* San Juan – Obviously, you can’t go on a Puerto Rico vacation without at least stopping in San Juan. As the capital city, there are a number of things to do, and to see, so you could spend an entire trip there, without being able to experience everything it has to offer. If you ask someone who has been there, they will probably direct you to one of the many sights, like the Casa Blanca, or Capilla del Cristo, and I would agree, those are important parts to any San Juan getaway.

But for me, the real treasure here are the clubs. The city is full of them, and whether you are looking for a grittier location, like Club Liquid (formerly Asylum Club), where young singles love to hang out, both gay and straight, or a totall packed venue with live music, and people of all types, like La Rumba. The nightlife if the bread and butter of San Juan.

* Fajardo – Probably my favorite place to go on a Puerto Rico vacation, or any vacation, Fajardo is great. While it doesn’t have the number of attractions you might find in other cities, it is a great place to relax, especially on the beach, with plenty of accommodations directly on the sand, and plenty of natural sights that will allow you to appreciate the beauty of the country.

They also have a great club, called the Anchor Inn, which has plenty of Latin bands performing live every weekend, and some very hot singles populating the area. This is a great place to go as a couple to get away, or alone, to get a taste of the local life…literally.
