Going to Bogota 20 years ago was really an adventure, as it had one of the biggest crime level in the world. Meanwhile the things came back to the normal and nowadays Bogota is a much safer place comparing to Rio de Janeiro or Caracas.

Night life in Bogota

All those silly things happened because of the rival clans and gangs involved in the dirty drug business. Even today you must avoid the drug smugglers on the streets, which is a normal precaution in any foreign city you visit.

Bogota is a big mountain city lieing at 2260 meters in the Andes. It counts 8 000  000 inhabitants (Bogotanos), being the capital and the most important city of Columbia. It is very well and picturesque positioned in a plateau of the Andes ( sabana de Bogota, which means savanna of Bogota) enjoying a mild climate all over the year. Bogota is one of the world’s highest capital, behind La Paz and Quito.

The history of Bogota and its 500 years of life reflects in the architecture of this unique city. First of all, a matter of national pride: the old town is mainly Spanish colonial with French influences. Second, the English influences are visible in the buildings from the first half of the XXth century. And third, the modern Bogota with its skyscrappers suffers of strong American presence and influence.

Bario Candelaria in Bogota

For a tourist the old quarter of Candelaria is the main center of interest. It is located in the downtown and is the most cosmopolitan from the all Bogota. It has a big soul attracting the Bogotan Boheme. E.g: Gabriel Garcia Marquez lived in this neighborhood. It contains many universities, libraries and museums, which made Bogota well knowned as “the Athens of South America“. Teatro Colon lies also in Bario Candelaria, and is the city’s most notorious theater. Another important strength of Candelaria is the vibrant night life and the big number of fancy restaurants. You can travel around the world on all five continents within a few hours simply visiting the restaurants of La Candelaria and tasting  their exquisite cuisine.

Coffee is Columbia’s most important export legal item ( the other one, drugs, is not legal and you are suposed to stay away from it ). Enjoy a wonderful columbian coffee in a bar from Candelaria in the very capital of Columbia! This is a thing to remember and to be said to other people.
