Munich is a picturesque city, set along the River Isar and to the north of the Bavarian alps, and is also one of Germany’s most forward thinking places, with cutting edge art and music scenes and trendy bars and nightclubs.

Munich was founded as a city in 1158, and literally means ‘home of the monks’, after the monastery situated on this site dating back from the 8th century. Munich went on to become the seat of the successful the Wittelsbach dynasty, who ruled the kingdom of Bavaria until the end of WWI. Munich has always been an affluent city, and there a number of excellent buildings that reflect a whole range of different design styles through the ages including gothic, Renaissance, Barque and neo-classical. This wealth has also led to a consistently strong patronage of the arts, and there are plenty of excellent museums, galleries, theatres and music halls.

Munich is famous for its tradition of beer brewing, and to this day there are still four world famous breweries, Augustiner, Hofbräuhaus, Paulaner and Spaten-Löwenbräu. Enjoying a glass of beer in one of the many beer halls or gardens is a popular tourist activity and the annual beer festival Oktoberfest, is one of the highlights of the year.

Munich suffered heavily during the Second World War (WWII) as its major links to Nazi power and command made it a target for intensive bombing by the Allies, and much of the city was destroyed. Rebuilding and restoration was carried out in the post war years enabled by Munich’s strong economy, which was soon able to recover from hardships of conflict. Munich has always been a popular tourist destination, and this combined with car manufacturing (BMW is based here) and a thriving film industry boosts the economy and keeps the city thriving.
