Six Flags Magic Mountain is undoubtedly the best thrill park in all of California – in fact, it may be the best thrill park west of the Mississippi. The park is home to some of the world’s most famous thrill rides, several of which have been world record holders – Revolution, Viper, X2, just to name a few. Unlike it’s nearby amusement park brethren, Six Flags is built for the thrill seeker and makes no qualms about it.

The park itself is loosely themed – there’s the mandatory boardwalk area, Gotham City, a Batman-themed section, an Asian inspired area, and a southwestern style area. Let’s not kid ourselves here – this isn’t Disney-style decor, this is “because we have to” decorating. The decor is easily lost on the ridiculous amount of steel and wood that make up the park. The park itself is built on a hill, which makes walking around the entire park a formidable task, especially in the 100-plus degree summer weather. However, for your troubles you are rewarded with an unbeatable collection of coasters.

Should you choose to head west when you enter the park, the first major coaster you find is Colossus. This coaster is notable in that it was the first roller coaster to feature more than two 100+ foot drops, and was at one point one of the biggest and fastest coasters in the world. It’s a fun ride, if there’s no wait, but has since been easily outclassed by it’s predecessors. Next to Colossus is Gotham City, where you’ll find both Batman: The Ride and Riddler’s Revenge. There are several Batman rides at various Six Flags parks; it’s an inverted coaster with several loops and rolls, and is a fairly short albeit fun ride. However, the real fun is next door at Riddler’s Revenge. One of Magic Mountain’s own, this standup rollercoaster holds several records: tallest (156 feet), longest drop (146 feet), fastest (65mph), longest (4370 feet), and most inversions for a standup coaster. Fantastic fun, although a bit painful on the groin area (still worth it). Further east, we’ll find Magic Mountain’s newest ride, Terminator: Salvation. No awards here, just a straightforward wooden roller coaster. Oh yeah, there’s also speakers in the back and a flaming truck along the course.

Now we’re into the “meat and potatoes” of the theme park. Here we’ll find Six Flag’s hardest hitting rides. First off is undeniably one of the most fun rides at the park, Tatsu. This coaster is designed to simulate the feeling of flying, and boy does it. You are strapped into the seat, which then lays you on your stomach. The ground gives way, and all that’s stopping you from falling to the ground is your chest restraint. Someone has clearly done plenty of research, becuase this restraint is solid; this is a good thing, as it will be put through the test during the ride’s 4 inversions. If that wasn’t enough to convince you of the ride’s greatness, how’s this: it’s the tallest, fastest, and longest flying roller coaster in the world.

Finally, we have the last of Magic Mountain’s greatest coasters. The first is Viper. This classic ride was once holder to several records: tallest, fastest, and highest loop. It’s favored by many coaster enthusiasts, and for good reason: with a whopping 7 inversions and 2:30 ride time, it’s hard to imagine it being forgotten in the near future. However, Magic Mountain’s true jewel is X2. X2 is billed as the world’s first “4th dimension coaster”. Whatever the marketers want to call it, one thing is certain: it’s pure madness. Unlike a traditional coaster, the seats can be rotated 360′. This opened up a whole new set of possibilities for the ride’s engineers, and the ride they came up with is like no other. It is impossible to describe the feeling of being on X2, except to say that by the end, you have no idea what just happened but you know that you had a great time.

If you’re looking for thrills, clearly Six Flags Magic Mountain should be a top contender in your list. Not only does it have an incredible pedigree, it’s current class of thrill rides is certainly no joke. Magic Mountain, truly the extreme theme park.
