There might be no nightlock, mockingjays, nor peacekeepers but travelers can visit the world of Katniss, Haymitch, and Peeta when they go to North Carolina where Hunger Games was shot in location.

The Hunger Games is the screen adaptation of the dystopian novel of Suzanne Collins and was shot in the in different sites and soundstages in the western portion of the state. The film has created a loud buzz in social media and is expected to become a blockbuster rivaling the success of the Twilight Series.

The story revolves around Katniss Everdeen who takes the place of her younger sister for the televised death match in the post apocalyptic setting where the powerful influences from The Capitol controls everything.

If you want to explore the world of Katniss and the rest of the characters of Hunger Games, here are some of the best destinations in North Carolina:

DuPont State Recreational Forest

The DuPont State Recreational Forest was used as the outdoor arena for The Hunger Games where tributes from every district, a girl and a boy, will compete to the death during a televised fight. There are waterfalls, pines, poplars, and streams, you can even try to locate the pond of Katniss where they shot the fireball sequence in the movie. The forest was also used for the aerial shots of the airstrip and some other exciting scenes which we do not want to reveal here.

Henry River Mill Village

Cruise along Interestate 40 and take the 119 Exit and see for yourself the Henry River Mill Village located just by Hildebran, the District 12 in The Hunger Games. The District 12 is the home for the main characters like Katniss, Gale, and Peeta. It is also the site for the bakery of the Mellark’s and the Seam’s.

The mill is already abandoned since it burned down in 1977. Take note that this is a private property and you just cannot get in but they have a heritage museum to satisfy all your curiosity.

Uptown Charlotte

The biggest city in the state, Charlotte, also served as the seat of wealth and power, The Capitol, in The Hunger Games film. This is where the over-styled and wealthy citizens of Panem live. The games as well as the 12 Districts are controlled from The Capitol. The interviews of the tributes were shot in the Knight Theater of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center and other locations.

Uptown Shelby

If you are wondering where the Hob, the Reaping, and other districts were shot, it was done in private warehouses near South Lafayette. The restaurants in this area was practically the dining halls of the cast and crew of The Hunger Games. One of their favorites is the Pleasant City Wood Fire Grill.

Navitat Canopy Tour

The Navitat is among the zipline parks located in the western portion of North Carolina. The scenes before the games between Katniss and other characters like Gale were shot in the Pisgah National Forest by the Coleman Boundary.
