Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States of America. It has an incredible amount of historical and political landmarks, memorials, and buildings. The nation’s capital is home to a sizable population and is also a large tourist destination, these things contribute to it having a number of attractions that are not political and historical in nature as well. A trip to Washington D.C. will go down as one of the more memorable vacations in most people’s lives.
Here are five things you must do when traveling to Washington D.C.
1. Washington Monument - One of the best views of the entire city of Washington D.C. can be seen from the observation deck of the 555 foot high Washington Monument. No visit is complete without a photo from one of the most famous landmarks in the city.
2. The Lincoln Assassination Walking Tour – A great step back in time and an awesome look at a historical event that everyone learned about in school. Now you can see it all, the entire night is played out for you, in real life.
3. National World War II Memorial - One of the finest tributes to the heroes of World War II can be found in Washington D.C. at the National World War II Memorial. The memorial itself is beautiful and magnificent and is a fitting tribute to the brave souls who fought in the second World War.
4. National Archives – There is only one place where you can view the most treasured artifacts in United States history. The National Archives in Washington D.C. are home to the US Constitution, Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Magna Carta, and much more. It isn’t the number one site on anyone’s list of things to do in the nation’s capital, but it almost always surprises everyone and becomes one of the highlights of their visit to the city.
5. National Air and Space Museum – One of the highlights of any visit to the Smithsonian Institutes is the National Air and Space Museum. View actual artifacts, multimedia displays, and an incredible amount of other exhibits related to the history of flight from the Wright Brothers and before up to space travel.
Washington D.C. truly has something to offer for everyone in the whole family. From strictly historical sites like war memorials and cemeteries, to professional sports venues, the city is the capital of the USA but it is also so much more. There are enough attractions in Washington D.C. so that any reasonable person shouldn’t run out of things to do for however many days they stay there.
