Corfu

Island of Corfu is a greek island where I would like to come back. And the most of the tourists feel the same, I met people coming to Corfu since 20 Years.

Lawrence Durrel, a well known writer, spent his childhood in Corfu. He wrote a famous book, called “My family and other animals” saying among other memorable words the following: ” True that some countries invite us to discover landscapes or wisdom. Moreover, Greece offers to us something more important: the power to discover ourselves.”

But where is Corfu,and what makes it so special? It lies in the Ionian Sea, before the albanian coast. During centuries, many nations came, settled and ruled here (Italians, English, Romanian etc). Since 1864 the island is Greek again, and ever since the tourism flourished.

Easy to understand: Italians come in mass in summer to discover the traces of their civilization; Austrians come to visit the palace of Kaiserin Sissi; many others come to discover or to see again Corfu.

Once, Corfu( in Greek is Kerkydra) was the land of fishermen. There are still today two villages of fishermen, Benitses and Roda, which live in summer from tourism, and not from fishing any more.

A travel to Corfu is an incursion in the history of Europe and of a few from its civilization. I discover the English Gingerbeer, called in Greek Tsitsibeera, which tastes very rich.

You can reach Corfu by plane or by ship. Once there, you must visit the capital, with all its museums and archaeological sites.

Corfu is also a shopping paradise, you can find here for sure something suited to you! Jewelery, crafts, etc etc, a wide offer. The downtown with its many boutiques and street vendor is very animated.

Do not miss in Corfu the sommer residence of kaiserin Sissi, called also Achilleon Palace.

Further: do not miss Sea Museum in Benitses, it costs only 3 Euro, and your kids will be delighted; visit Aqualand ( my tipp: in the afternoon is cheaper).

But you are in Corfu also for bathing. Here Brooke Shields turned the famous Blue Lagoon. You can also discover dreaming places, having also intimacy, by hiring a boot. You simply wil not need using your bathing suits, if you understand what I say.

Many history, many nice places and good people, this is Corfu in my opinion. Discover Corfu. Discover the wonderful Greek kitchen( dinners between 6 and 30 Euro per person), discover the intensive night life(Pink Palace, Palladium Night Club).
