The biggest advantage of Phu Quoc Island is to be still out of the paths of mass tourism. You can still visit this interesting island before the expected tourism boom, as many leading hotels chains are waiting to start up big infrastructure on the Phu Quoc Island.

Phu Quoc Island is under Vietnam jurisdiction, but was an important motive of arguments between Vietnam, Cambodia and even Thailand. Phu Quoc Island even caused a Vietnam-Cambodia war in the 70’s. Therefore on the island are more units and squads of the Vietnamese army. Adding to that the fact that 80 % of the island are protected due to its forest as a national park results in a totally unfriendly island. Which is  terrible wrong!

Seldom I saw a nicer island and more friendly people as on Phu Quoc Island. The main town of the Island, Duong Dong, is a wonderful town, which looks like a fishermen village. On every corner people sell shells or fish on the streets. You can make a boat tour of the Phu Quoc Island starting from Duong Dong harbor.

On the coastline of Long Beach already emerged some hotels, and you can stay whether on a budget, or spoiled in luxury. Staying on Long Beach you can explore the Phu Quoc Island through hiking and trekking in the jungle,pretending Robinson Crusoe( the island is not bigger than Singapore). Or you can discover the black pepper farms from the core of the Phu Quoc Island, one of the most important occupation of the locals (it is said that during French colonial presence in Vietnam, every French citizen ate pepper from Phu Quoc Island).

The other important product coming from Phu Quoc Island is the the famous nuoc mam, which is a delicious fish sauce based on anchovy, which is a part of any Vietnamese meal. The nuoc mam is produced by smoking, and the American pilots joked a lot during the Vietnam war about the heavy smoke from Phu Quoc! Another memory from the war is the huge camp for 40 000 people who was based here, the biggest in all Vietnam.

But this is history, and nowadays Phu Quoc waits for your visit. You must take note that the climate on Phu Quoc Island is tropical, and from May to November the Island is exposed to heavy mansoon storms.
