While there are a number of reasons to take a vacation in Manila, there are two that this city is really known for: the culture, and the shopping. We will discuss the culture first, as it is probably the greater of the two that brings people here, and leads to some exciting events you will not want to miss.

Manila is perhaps most loved for it’s religious sights, being covered in various Protestant churches, Catholic cathedral, and Buddhist temples, showing the mixture of influences from various settlers throughout the city’s history. Probably the most revered of these holy buildings is the Malate Church, one of the oldest standing structures in Manila, that withstood the WWII attacks on the city. Housing the beloved Nuestra Señora de Remedios (Our Lady of Remedies), which is an image of the Virgin Mary, it is a favorite spot for both locals and tourists alike.

If you are looking for a full education on the history and culture of Manila and her citizens, then you will want to visit the Ayala Museum, which features frequently changing exhibits all about Manila, and what it means to be Filipino. They have tours offered by very knowledgeable guides, who can explain elements in the city’s history in such great detail that it draws you in completely.

Nearby to the museum is the Ayala Center, where those who love fashion should always visit. Offering brand names and designer clothes for a small percentage of the cost in the West, you can walk out with some amazing finds, and all from the current season, with nothing out of date.

In the San Luis Complex, you will find a tiny store called Vacoop, which sells some great local art. If you are a fan of modern work, and are always out for that truly unique find, you will love this shop. Not only are all of the artists relative amateurs, but you will be supporting Manila’s artist community every time you step through the door.

If you enjoy handmade products that no one else has, then check out Balikbayan Handicrafts on Arnaiz Ave. With plenty of wood carved objects of varying class and quality, you can find some extremely strange items in this little store, and it’s always worth a look. If you want to bring something home that none of your friends have seen before, you will find it in Balikbayan’s. Just be sure to look carefully, and plan on spending some time there. The sheer amount of items for sale here is alarming.
