The magic of Amazon River

Amazon River means for many people something fantastic, something over natural. Fact is, Amazon River is magic, irresistible and attractive. One fifth of the total water reserves of the Earth flow through Amazonia. It is by far the river with the biggest volume worldwide, and its volume is bigger than the combined volume of the following eight world’s big rivers.

The springs of Amazon River
Its basin is mostly an unexplored jungle (selva), called Amazonia, which is an important lung of our planet. According last measuring Amazon is also the world’s longest river, with a length 0f 6240 km. It becomes so longer than the Niles, Africa’s representative in this selective club, but there are other measuring needed to prove this thing. There are practically no bridges on the Amazon, as nobody needs them (There are no people and no roads in the jungle).

Amazon River and its tributaries
Amazon River is also a cultural landmark for the all South America, as it collects waters from all the component countries of the continent. It is possible for big transoceanic ships to go deep in the jungle on Amazon River; smaller ships can go up to Peru. The mouths of Amazon are amazing and incredible: almost 300 km wide, you must see that, is imposible to describe.
It took for a while for scientists to explain why the Amazon River did not build a huge delta on its mouth. The explanation is pororoca, a giant tidal wave of 4 meters height, going from Atlantic against the curent. Pororoca is very impressive and very dangerous for ships, but a paradise for surfers.

Mouths of the Amazon River
The only cities on Amazon are Manaus, Belem in Brazil and Iquitos in Peru. No major country capital lies on Amazon, no big dam. Unfortunately there are many projects for Amazonia : a road which shall unify Caracas with Brasilia, and a giant dam (of course the biggest worldwide) which could produce a fertile land of 600 000 sqkm, the surface of Peru. I am personally totally against these projects, and I wonder what say other environmentalists.

There are 5000 species of sweet water fish living in Amazon River, which means a third of the total species worldwide. The same proportions keep the endangered species of the Amazon rain forest ( or selva). The wild life is very much on its own in the selva, which is one of the latest sanctuaries of unspoiled nature on Earth.
There are so many things to do and to discover for anyone wishing to go in Amazonia. First of all, a cruise on the Amazon River. Second, a plane flight over Amazonia. You need actually a life time to learn and understand Amazon.
