Beirut is a brilliant glamorous city, with a special identity. It is both Oriental and Occidental, and also the most European among the Arabian cities. It is doubtless right to name it the Paris of the East!

Beirut has been lived for over 5000 years, and thus one of the oldest cities worldwide. Phoenicians, Greeks, Ottomans, Arabians came here and settled, as the ruins are able to prove it. In the first half of the XXth century Beirut was under French protection, and became a very modern and attractive touristic city. Beirut is an incredible mix of different religions and nationalities, and thus by far the most cosmopolitan city of the East, and mixed marriages are still a taboo. Christian and Muslims are the most important confessions, sharing approximately 40 % each. They have lived for decades very peaceful in this magnificent city, until 1976 when a Civil War began. It lasted longer than 10 years, splitting the city and destroying very much of it. The City Center with its many hotels, restaurants, fancy boutiques, elegant avenues and theaters became a devastated  no man’s land. Very sad and very true.

After the Civil War Beirut was totally rebuild, regaining its name and glamor. It is by far one of the most important financial and cultural hub of the East, and it is thought to host in the Great Urban Area 2 000 000 people ( no one knows it for sure, the last census dates back from 1937!). The Beirutis are very friendly and very good dressed. If you wanna be recognized there you must also dress very chic when going out at night. Nevertheless, there still are in Beirut some bad famed neighborhoods which you must avoid, because the people there are not normally and friendly. Besides, avoid the camps of Palestinean refugees. Avoid unfavorable political comments also, and you are going to have a perfect Beirut vacations.

You can make yourself an impression about the glorious history of Beirut visiting one of the most important and notorious city museums: whether the National Museum, or the Museum of AUB (American University of Beirut).

Beirut is a partying city. The Beirutis drink much and smoke a lot, and stay in the clubs until sunrise. They are very tolerant against gays, making the city the only one Arabian city able to offer a social life for them. But the city is not only gay atractive. The Beirut harbour is one of the biggest worldwide, and offers besides a real paradise for the scuba divers: many ship wrecks wait to be seen and touched. Or visit one of the many gorgeous beach clubs ( e.g. Riviera or Saint George). They don’t offer sandy beaches, but you can also sail, play tennis and golf.

Another atraction in Beirut is the food, consisting in a fantastic mix of spices and smells from the French and Arabian kitchen. Taste the amazing unbelievable delicious Lebanese Mezza, consisting of thirty hot and cold mixed dishes. Or the unbeatable sweets Baklawa, Ktaef, Halawet. It is really a simphony for your tastes.

Very close to Beirut is the Jeita Grotto and mountains where you can ski in winter. But I think is better to stay as long as you can in Beirut, enjoying every minute spend here.
