Well, dear friends, breath deeply and listen to me: The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a place you must see in this life. It is really one of the Earth’s most impressive and most beautiful places.

Swamps and islands in the Okavango Delta
But, first of all, let’s make it clear: if you think to a classic delta, you are terribly wrong. Okavango Delta is not a place where the river reaches the ocean. The Okavango River never reaches the ocean! It simply vanishes in the desert, due to the strong transpiration and evaporation. 100 years ago it was totally impossible to admit and understand that, but this is the true: the mighty sandy Kalahari Desert simply swallows the Okavango River! The Okavango Delta is actually Africa’s biggest oasis.

Figure now a huge surface of water in the middle of a desert. Actually, Okavango Delta covers 25 000 sq km, which are a real paradise for Africa’s wildlife. If being a kid you saw some animal books about Africa’s wildlife, try to remember the species and the names. Most probably, you are going to see all those animals live. It is really a celebration of life, of wildlife actually.

The landscape in Okavango Delta is changing minute by minute. Island appear and dissapear, getting a thick salt crust, due to strong evaporation. In the mostly surfaces of Okavango Delta the water is not deep at all, only a few centimeters, making a paradise for all living creatures from froggs to lions.
There are more possibilities to discover the Okavango Delta. First, for the busy people who can afford, a travel by plane over the Okavango Delta is a must. Thus anyone can figure the size and the richness of this wildlife sanctuary. The most travelers come to the city of Maun, and then take part to organized safaris in the Delta, which offer trained guides and boat cruises. There are some bungalows camps, which are not cheap, but there are no other possibilities. Other travelers try to discover Okavango Delta by their own, with their cars. It is useless, in my opinion: you can get lost, and you can’t discover the really good places for animals and bird watching.
Protect yourself in Okavango Delta from mosquitos induced diseases, like malaria, and don’t camp on your own near crocodiles and lions. No other precautions needed.
Visit Okavango Delta as soon possible, and try not to miss or postpone this unique experience.
