Saint Lucia (or Sainte Lucie for the French speakers) is a special Carribean island. It is hilly, covered with rain forests, has a surface equal with two thirds of Cape Cod and counts 160 000 people.

From these 160 000 inhabitants (most of them African descents), Saint Lucia gave to the rest of the world two Nobel Prize winners. That means, that statistically speaking, Saint Lucia counts more Nobel prize winners than any other nation!

Saint Lucia was subject to 14 wars between France and Britain, which were both mesmerized by the beauty of this unique island. Today Fort Rodney is still a mute eye witness of the past glory, and a major tourist attraction.

The picturesque Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia

The picturesque Castries is the capital of Saint Lucia

Most of the tourists come to Saint Lucia during Carribean cruises. They only stay a day or two, and make shopping or  jungle safari. Too pity in my opinion, Saint Lucia has much more to offer. Most of the visitors come to Castries, the capital of Saint Lucia. Don’t expect to find museums and culture life in Castries, it is a town with 60 000 inhabitants, which managed to preserve its picturesque, colonial and hilly aspects, despite the last developments.

The tourism in Saint Lucia is booming! Not only in Castries, but also near the other towns of Vieux Fort and Soufrieres. Every year appear about 1000 rooms, mostly in high luxury hotels. It is surely Saint Lucia time! The travelers could also fly to Saint Lucia, there are two local airports in Castries and Vieux Fort.

Discover Saint Lucia through organized tours or by yourself. Hire taxi, but not necessary the ones recommended by the hotels (they could be too expensive). Hiring taxis on your own is a big spare of money, specially if you travel on a budget. You can also take the semi regular vans leading from Castries to Soufrieres and Vieux Port, which has a capacity of 12 to 14 people. Take part to the local carnivals or the local festivals, held every Friday, and try to taste the local kitchen visiting remote villages, out of the normal paths. In these villages you will find for sure someone to cater for you, which is a charming experience. Be sure also to taste in Saint Lucia the local rum Elements 8, which is one of the best and finest worldwide.

Many travelers find Saint Lucia irresistible and try to remain here, based on the booming tourism. Discover for yourself this charming island, even if you won’t settle there. It is simply fascinating to see The Pitons from the Hotel Ladera by Soufriere. Amy Winehouse discovered also Saint Lucia, stayed naked (which is not legal and outrageous) and drinking too much from the tasty Elements 8. But the paparazzi from the British press were very happy about all these events!
