Nothing can be more exotic than Timbuktu, which is a little town in the southern part (Sahel) of the Sahara Desert.
The town might look empoverished, inhabited by poor people. But Timbuktu is near the Morgana. In my opinion, the existence of this town is a celebration of life in Sahara, and a symbol of the human strength. Some people say, after visiting Timbuktu, that it looks desolant. Must be a joke. it really looks marvelous, as you consider the continous fight with the Sahara Desert.
Timbuktu represents such a miracle and attaction for many people worlwide, that it has even an airport. It is probably the word’s tinniest city having an airport(32 000 inhabitants).
Timbuktu was founded during the Xth century and flourished in the XVIth century. Obviously, at those times, it was a huge oasis in the heart of the Sahara desert. In the XVth century Timbuktu was already an academic city for islamic studies, proudly counting 25000 students. In the city, widespread through the town families, there are 15 000 very valuable manuscripts, and today there are projects for gathering and copying all these books in a library.
All the buildings in Timbuktu are mood made, and after so many centuries they have a special unique glance. They have inspired Antonio Gaudi for building his projects in Barcelona.
Timbuktu was always also an important trade crossroads. Main wares: salt, gold, slaves etc.
In Timbuktu you can take part during january to a special festival: the desert festival. Local and worldwide musicians are celebrating thus the fight with Sahara, warning also about climate changes.
For all these above mentioned reasons, Timbuktu became an UNESCO heritage site and deserves for sure your visit.
