The Victoria Falls is located between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe in the southern regions of Africa. The fall which was locally named mosi-oa –tunya, translated as the smoke thunder, by natives who inhabits the area few miles from the fall.

Not much was known about the fall until the explorer Dr David Livingstone visited the site and renamed it Victoria Falls, the name which is widely being used today.

The fall is perhaps unarguably the world’s largest waterfall site. The average flow rate is 1088cm/s and stands at a height of 360ft above the ground. The rate of the flow tends to lower during the dry season, and highest during the raining season. These peak periods when the falls is at its highest is the period between the month of February and May, minimum flows are witnessed during the month November.

The area around the Victoria Falls spans across several miles between the two countries that shares boundaries with the Falls. Thick vast vegetation can be seen around the site. The vegetation around the fall is typical rain forest vegetation with tall and ever green trees. The most beautiful aspect of the fall is that the fall can be viewed from a simple standing location from a few distances from the site.

The fall harbors different species of birds, such as the white water bird that can be seen constantly hovering around the fall.

The stream close to the falls is home to several species of fishes, it is estimated that about thirty nine different species of fishes have their homes in this stream and other aquatic animals.

Victoria Falls, has become widely important to the people of the regions, one of such ways is the establishment of wildlife parks in the area. Victoria national park as well as mosi-oa-tunya national park in Zimbabwe is always visited by tourists yearly. On the adjacent side of these fall is also the Zambezi national park. These parks harbor several species of wild animals ranging from elephants, buffalos, giraffes, antelopes among many other animals. All these have been put in place, in other to protect the environment as well as preserve its valuable nature and species of fishes as well as other animals that inhabits the area.

This fall has perhaps become one of the most attractive sites visited by tourists in Africa.

For tourists, there lots of buses that are available to convey visitors to the site, this is because the site is easily accessible by road, and also there is always the comfort of fantastic places to relax. There are hotels and Inns close to the fall for those who want to have adequate comfort to relax and enjoy a splendid tour of the fall.

There are lots of games facilities also available for sporting activities, the fall also has a fantastic stream for visitors who love swimming and having fun.

Victoria Falls has continued to remain one of the sites to marvel at, and a magnificent site to behold  one of nature’s greatest gift to man.
