In preparation for the 2010 Olympics, Whistler has been spending tons of money on capital improvements. None have been more showy then their amazing Peak 2 Peak Gondola system. This brand new gondola promises to transport visitors from Whistler mountain to Blackcomb mountain. An impressive feat considering the whopping 2.7miles the gondolas will have to cross.
The Peak 2 Peak gondola system is not only one of the longest gondola systems in the world, it holds the record for longest distance between two towers (1.88 miles) and highest above ground (1,427 feet). Amazingly, there are only 4 gondola towers supporting the entire system! Visitors who experience the 11 minute ride are rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views in all of Canada – the gondolas were built so that visitors could see 360′ around and become immersed in the beauty of the Whistler valley. For the brave of heart, there are even 2 gondolas with glass floors.
Safety is of utmost importance, and the designers have taken every precaution. The gondolas are designed to withstand winds up to 100km/h, and testing at similar gondolas have recorded winds of up to 120km/h without any significant decrease in performance. To prevent against any possible collision with aircraft, and Peak 2 Peak lifts have one of the most comprehensive defensive systems envisioned. Radars constantly scan the local area for planes, and using computers determine if any are likely to collide with the lift. If the system senses a detection, super high-power strobe lights work to ward off aircraft, and an alarm is sounded on all airplane frequencies.
The project was so highly regarded that the Discovery Channel has been recording the teams’ progress since 2007. A special will air on December 23 and 24th, titled “Peak 2 Peak: Building the Worlds Biggest Gondola”. During the winter time, the lift acts primarily to transport skiiers from one mountain to the next, however during the summer months the gondolas will focus on tourism revenue.
Gondolas are always great fun, and the new Peak 2 Peak lift promises to bring something new and unseen to travelers. Whether you’re a skiier, snowboarder, or just a flat out tourist, the lift will is sure to amaze. If the lift doesn’t get you, the scenery sure will.
