Winter can be a great time to go away on holiday, especially if you are interested in winter sports, or are on a tight budget. You can get some great deals at top hotels and resorts during this time, as the ‘high’ season is over and many places reduce their rates and offer incentives to keep their business topped up over the winter.

If you like it hot, then there are still plenty of sunny destinations to escape to when the dreariness of the wet, cold weather of winter is getting you down. The Caribbean is a wonderful destination in the winter, the perfect tropical getaway, and if you want to escape the crowds then Anguilla is a lovely little island, with some exclusive luxury hotels and villas with fine dining restaurants. Dominica is also a wonderful island to visit in the Caribbean, a little cheaper than some of the more popular and more exclusive places, and has some dramatic and stunning landscapes such as green rainforests and thundering waterfalls.

The Maldives are a lovely collection of islands deep in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and another great spot for a sunny winter getaway. One of the larger islands is Soneva Fushi, which has some great hotels and outstanding local dining, and the white sandy beaches and blue lagoons that surround all the islands will take your breathe away. If you are interested in water sports then there are some excellent spots for snorkelling, fishing and diving.

If you are interested in the hustle and bustle of the city nightlife, but still want to relax on the beach during the day then Miami is the place for your perfect winter holiday. The miles of sandy beach are surrounded by trendy hotels, restaurants, bars and nightclubs, and there is a definite adults only party feel as soon as the sun goes down. Miami also has some wonderful examples of Art Deco architecture, and you can get some exciting and educational day trips out to the nearby Florida glades.

One of the most popular winter sun destinations is Thailand. This country effortlessly combines wonderful cuisine, exotic landscapes, mystical spirituality and vibrant nightlife, and sunshine is pretty much guaranteed throughout February and March. The island of Phuket has a number of top hotels and resorts as well as some beautiful temples and waterfalls to visit.
