Travel is not something that makes everybody jump up and sing. To some, it is a tedious thing that needs to be undertaken. For some, it is something to look forward to once in a way. There are however a select few for whom travel is a passion. They are the kind who would always like to be on the move, seeing different places and meeting different people all the time. These are the kind of people who need to enter the travel industry as guides and tour operators.

Since the job market is getting more and more competitive it is essential to find something that you are good at; also make sure that you are going to enjoy what you are going to do. The latter is far more important than the former, for the simple reason that if you do something that you really don’t like, you are sure to think of giving it up in a very short time. So, if you really have a penchant for travelling, then you need to get your gear into shape and sign up with a travel agency to take their tourists and travellers all over the countryside on guided tours. You are sure to enjoy the process. Before you fall head over heels in love with the prospect of travelling so much, hold your horses, because travelling with irate customers or tourists can be a very uncomfortable thing.

There are a few things that a travel guide needs to do before he becomes really successful in his profession. Some of the salient points that need to be remembered are listed below:
• The necessary certification to become a travel guide is of paramount importance. It would be very difficult for a person to hire you if you do not have the required qualifications.
• Do try to get a high profile job right at the beginning. A high salary should not be the only thing that you are aiming for. If you do this, you are likely to continue waiting till doomsday waiting for the right opportunity. Instead of this, think of any job as a learning experience. You are sure to get hired by the right firm, if you gain a lot of experience. The more varied the experience is, the better will be your chances of landing a plum job.
• Try developing your interpersonal skills as far as possible, because these are the skills that will get you very far, as a tourist guide. If you are going to be a grumpy person, not able to communicate well with the people who are travelling with you, they are not going to give a very good report about you. So, ensure that you are courteous and kind and have the best of manners.
• Try to acquire a good knowledge of first aid practices. Without this, you might find yourself in a soup, wondering what to do in an emergency. Since you might have elderly people and small children travelling with you, this skill is particularly essential.
