There are a number of reasons to visit Puerto Rico, and every year millions of people choose it as their vacation destination. But of all of the reasons to travel to this tropical country, it’s the Puerto Rico beaches that really make it strand out, and bring people back again and again. The greatest quality of the beautiful beaches in the area is the fact that there are so many laying across each city, each one offering something just a little bit different the next.

With so many to choose from, it can be difficult to decide which Puerto Rico beach to visit first, and with literally dozens over the span of the area, it is impossible to see them all in one trip. There are a few, however, that seem to really stand alone, and offer the best in the Puerto Rico beach experience. Here is a list of my own top picks, for anything from surfing, to swimming, to relaxing in the sun.

Luquillo Beach

Luquillo Beach by San Juan, Puerto Rico

Located in the capital city of San Juan, Luquillo is a local favorite for families, especially those who have small children. There are limited waves in this part of the ocean, as it is blocked off from the Atlantic by the coral-reefs that surround it, creating a lovely little area to take the kids. There is also an ample space of sand, far enough from the water to create great sand castles, or to lay around, and tan.

Playa de Ponce

Playa De Ponce in Puerto Rico

Playa De Ponce in Puerto Rico

As the name would suggest, this beach is located in Ponce, or, more accurately, just outside of it. Its waters are some of the calmest in the country, and so it makes it an ideal spot for swimming, an activity that isn’t always possible in the ocean. The waters are also a bit warmer then normal, as the stillness allows the sun to heat the surface of the water more effectively.

Rosado Beach

Rosado Beach in Puerto Rico is perfect for couples

- Just to the East of Ponce, Rosado Beach is a solitary spot, especially perfect for couples. Rarely populated by more then perhaps a few people at a time, and often not even that, Rosado is arguably the most romantic Puerto Rico beach. Enjoy your time together by the water, with no one to disturb you.

Playa Higuero

Playa Higuera on Rincon Island, Puerto Rico

Playa Higuera on Rincon Island, Puerto Rico

One of Rincon’s many beaches, this great surfing area is famous for it’s massive waves, and so a hot spot for anyone who loves to hop on a board. Once the site of Puerto Rico’s legendary surfing competitions, in which people from all over the world would attend, there is nowhere better to catch real air.

Ocean Park

Ocean Park by San Juan, Puerto Rico

For all of those who are looking for a great singles scene to spice up your trip, the place for you is Ocean Park, located in San Juan. Whether you are gay, straight, or like a little of both, there are plenty of young men and women here, strutting their stuff in string bikini’s and swim trunks, looking for others to share in their beach day.
