Did you think about your daily habits and what could they mean for the people from over few centuries? Did you think that the city you live could vanish and remain without any inhabitants? Of course you did!
Visiting ghost towns is for some travelers the favorite way of spending vacations, and a must for any experienced travelers. It is fascinating to visit a ghost towns and ask all possible questions about the people living there in the blossom times of those settlements. Sometimes is really fascinating to speculate about the possible reasons of the decay of the ghost towns (natural disasters; climate change; foreign occupations and lost wars; economic decay etc). There are many Ghost Towns around the world. Some of them were ruling places of wonderful civilizations (Roman, Inca, Maya etc); some of them are much newer and are no more than 2 centuries old ( Gold Rushes from Far West, Australia and Alaska created a few interesting Ghost Towns).
But now I am going to introduce you some notorious old Ghost Towns. Probably you already saw them, as they are major targets of pilgrimage for tourists around the world:
1.Pompeii

Pompeii was a wealthy roman residence destroyed by a volcanic eruption of the Mount Vesuvius. Most of things from Pompeii are in the best state of conservation, including the bodies. A question appears like an obsession: why they did not run away? Possible answers: the eruption took them totally by surprise, during the night; or they thought to be a divine punishment.
2. Petra
Petra is the former city of Rekem, which consisted mainly on rock carved houses. Nowadays looks very strange, interesting and attractive. It is classified as a modern world’s wonders, and many archaeologists as also ordinary tourists like you and me go to see them every year. It lies now in Jordan, on a large valley (Wadi Arabah) leading from Dead Sea to The Gulf of Aqaba. It is according UNESCO a World Heritage Site, and one of the most interesting archaeological site.
3.Palmyra

Palmyra has been for many century an important breaking point in the Arabian desert. In the good old times it was wealthy and rich. Archaeologists found in Palmyra many artifacts, which are exposed today in many leading museums around the world. The decay of Palmyra started under Ottoman rule in XVIth century, after 2ooo years of good times, and the simple explanation is the change of the normal trade ways in the Middle East.
4. Macchu Pichu

Machu Pichu was once a flourishing city
Machu Pichu is very dificult to reach. Getting Machu Pichu on the Inca Trail is the favorite way for many adventurous travelers. Machu Pichu lies in the heart of the Andes and was once a flourishing city (whether a capital, or a vacation resort for the Incas). Immediately after the Spanish invasion it decayed and was very late rediscovered, only in 1911.
5.Palenque

Amazing maya pyramids in Palenque
Palenque contains some of the biggest and finest monuments of the Maya architecture and civilisation. It decayed after the Spanish conquistadors invaded Mexico. It hosts pyramids, bas-relief, and sculpture which are very meaningful for the understaining of maya civilisation. Visit in Palenque Temple of Inscriptions and temple of The Cross Group, and the amazing aquaduct, making the nereby river flowing under the Central Plaza!

I would love to go to pompeii and see the history left in stone from the Mount Vesuvius eruption. I’ve seen so many pictures, but one day I travel and see the real thing
