For decades, the Germans have been addicted traveler around the world. They have been world’s most traveling nation, and the vacation abroad was a must for most of them. Nowadays, some facts make the situation changing: they are aware that long distance flights are very bad for the carbon print, and they are also aware of the economical crisis.

Plus, after having seeked for longtimes the best beaches in Mallorca or Thailand, they discovered since a short time the singing beaches of the island Usedom. Literally, when the weather is good, while walking on the pristine beaches of Usedom you can hear a melody! This phenomenon is unique in the all world, and it is produced by the special structure of the white sand from Usedom.

The island of Usedom is only 2 hours away from Berlin by car. Germany shares the Usedom with Poland, which owns a quarter of the island. Usedom has been for century a favorite destination for German rulers and aristocrates. During the comunist time the royal villas from Usedom have been given to apparatchnikhs, but the people nevertheless came for FKK (culture of naked bodies, or Freikoerperkultur, as the German say).
Nowadays nudism has still its places, but the spa culture brought the revival of Usedom. It is said, that even a short walk on the beach has wonderful effects (simply wind cosmetic, whatever unbelievable can sounds to you).

You can spend excelent nights, weekend and vacations on Usedom in the best conditions. There are many hotels and royal villas where you can be spoiled, but also much simplier bed and breakfast houses for backpackers. But keep in mind: Island of Usedom is very popular nowadays, and you need reservation usually. Check the luxury royal Villa Staudt where the Kaiser Wilhelm used to have tea, and get a splurge appartment for 100 euro.
Maybe the best way to know Usedom is to hire and ride a bike. The all island is 30 km away, and you can see and know it within hours in this relaxing way. Be sure not to miss the Peenemunde Museum, where Hitler launched the first rockets ever, the V1 and V2. These are the forefathers of the today ballistic missiles. Notice also on your way the three German villages on the island: Bansin, Ahlbech and Zinnowitz.

Another tip from me: in the old railway station from Henningsdorf there is an excellent restaurant called Stellwerk, which caters according to old recipes. Taste there the unbelievable hering pralines, a strange combination between fish and dark chocolate.
So, dear fellows, remember to escape at Usedom when in Berlin, as you don’t need to be German for going there.
