What’s Keeping You From Taking A Road Trip?

One of the great vacation ideas that has been around since before the automobile was invented is the taking of a good road trip. There are a great deal of variables that make one road trip very different from the next one. There are really only two essentials when it comes to taking a road trip; the first one is a road or route, and the second one is some kind of vehicle to propel you down the road. The rest is entirely up to you.
Problem: You don’t have a suitable vehicle to take a road trip with.
Solution: If you don’t have a vehicle, or the right vehicle, to take a road trip with, there are options available to you that you may not even think of. In many regions, towns are spaced as close together as two to ten miles, if this is the case then you can take a bike road trip. Ride from one town to the next and then return by the same or different route. Another option is renting a car, or better yet renting an RV.
Problem: Taking a road trip with your kids will be unbearable.
Solution: Road tripping with kids can be quite enjoyable. Bring along lots of diversions for them like: a portable DVD player, books, magazines, travel games, an Ipod or other music player, and of course snacks. Kids are like sponges when it comes to learning things so stop at every roadside historical marker. Who knows, your kids may learn something and not even realize it.
Problem: With the price of fuel today, road tripping is too expensive.
Solution: The price of fuel has made many things unaffordable these days, but there are ways to alter your road trip plans to compensate for the high cost of fuel. If it is an overnight trip you are going on don’t stay in motels, instead camp out. Campgrounds usually charge rates that are far less expensive than reserving motel rooms. Pack a good amount of non-perishable food to bring along. You should especially pack snacks because buying treats at gas stations can be quite expensive, but also pack a few items that would make it easier for you to enjoy a light lunch at a park or along side a river. Another money saving thing you can do to make a road trip more affordable is to try and pick out sources of entertainment that have little or no cost associated with them. When it comes to entertainment, there are a number of free or very inexpensive options that most people overlook including state and national parks, waterfronts, self-guided tours, and more.
Problem: I’ve never gone on a road trip before and don’t know where to go.
Solution: The solution to where to go on your next road trip is the easiest of all problems to solve. Get out a map of your state or region and start really looking at the places you’ve never been to. Often just driving through a couple of never before seen small towns can provide some good solid entertainment. Look at the historic sites and parks that you’ve never gotten a chance to see. A map is a great resource for planning a road trip. Another great way to plan a road trip is to not plan it at all. Design the route of your road trip as you go. Maybe even make a game of it, pick the first destination and then once you get there the next person can pick the next destination. Alternate who gets to pick the next place to eat. There are any number of ways to inject a great deal of spontaneity into a road trip.
A road trip is a great way to spend some true quality time with friends, family, or your significant other. With our busy lives and lack of quality time, often the conversations you have with the rest of the occupants of the car while driving is well worth the expense of the gas it takes to get you there. So, get out there and road trip and don’t let anything stand in your way.

When my husband suggested “chucking it all” to travel cross-country in a converted bus, I asked, “Why can’t you be like a normal husband in a midlife crisis and have an affair or buy a Corvette?” We’re both psychiatrists, but he’s obviously a much better shrink, as we soon set forth with our sixty-pound dog, two querulous cats — and no agenda.
We had our share of adventures and misadventures (fire, armed robbery, finding ourselves in a nudist RV park to name just a few), but ultimately, the trip was so life-changing, we decided to sell our house to full time. Please see my website for pictures, videos (including the nudists – now I have your attention!), my blog about life on the road and tons of other fun stuff.

It is important to have lived it. I am glad to hear about such strong people like you and your husband. Looking forward to hear from you again.
