5 Travel Myths you didn’t know

There are various myths about travelling that are perpetuated around the world, and seem to so plausible that many people never bother to check them out before they set out on holiday. Here are five of these travelling myths you may not yet have come across:
* Cruise packages are all-inclusive - It may say on the holiday brochure that your cruise is ‘all inclusive’ but in reality this is far from the truth. Check the small print and you will find that even though tea, coffee and juice is free, more often than not alcoholic drinks (and usually soft drinks) are not covered by the deal, as well as additional snacks/light meals outside of the main dining package. Most larger cruise liners also have ’speciality’ restaurants, with gourmet or fine dining, which are also not included in the package. A meal here could set you back a minimum of $70, and you will have to pay top price for all of your wine and champagne. Photography services also catch people out, and most cruise liners provide staff photographers who will record your holiday for you – but at a hefty price. Take your own camera and save yourself a lot of money. Tours and excursions are also tempting, but again are not part of the original deal. You are better off finding out a list of the tours before you leave, and booking/paying for them in advance, as otherwise they will be charged to your onboard account and this can soon add up. Gym services are usually free on cruise ships, but the spa treatments are not, and can be very pricy. Also don’t forget the mini bar in your room is not free, and like regular hotels the prices are steep. You are much better off ordering something from room service, as this is normally a free 24hr service.
* Trains are the cheapest way to travelling across Europe – Sadly this is not true. Train tickets have been rising steadily over the last ten years, and are now at an all time high across the whole of Europe. A standard ticket from Frankfurt to Rome costs a minimum of $350, and the price will depend on what time and day you are travelling. Flights are so cheap now you can fly from Frankfurt to Rome for just $90, and don’t have to worry about food or drink either as the trip just takes a few hours. Travelling the same distance on the train takes over 12 hours, and although can be more relaxing you will need to factor in additional accommodation and dining cost if you are travelling overnight.
* Hotel Key Cards can be used to commit fraud – This is false but very persistent, as the possibility does exist for this type of fraud. Hotels do encrypt some of your details onto a key card, which you can then use to swipe items/services/food that you purchase on site to your hotel account. However actual credit card or personal information is never put on hotel key cards, this is a complete myth, so there is no risk of the key card being used when you leave to hack into your credit card account.

* A secret code can get you new seats straight away if your flight is cancelled or delayed – this is a great little myth with some basis in truth, which is probably why it is still hanging around. In the old days there was a Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) regulation that required airlines to find you another flight immediately if yours was cancelled or seriously delayed, regardless of the airline or fare you originally booked with – all you had to do was quote the rule number (referred to as the secret code) which was Rule 240. Sadly this is no longer true, as airlines set their own rules and regulations these days and every time you book a ticket you are agreeing to these rules. Most airlines do not promise to find you a new flight now and state in their small print that if your original flight is cancelled or delayed is at their ’sole discretion’ to find alternative travel.
* You save more money if you book late – again this used to be a fact, but is actually no longer true. Online travel booking services and cheap flights have led to a surge in holiday traffic, and prices and availability have become a lot more flexible. These days is actually better to book earlier, as popular packages fill up quickly and the really good deals are available to a much wider audience of people through the internet, so get snapped up very quickly.
