What makes a city to be bike friendly? I have chosen personally the bellow listed cities judging the length and safety of the special bike lanes, the use of the bike in that city or country, the respect showed by drivers and walkers against bikers. Also, the basics: that city must anyway to be worth to be visited. Fact is that every city could be visited much better by bike, than by car, but not all the municipalities have understood this simply law. Every Maire of a major city should be aware of this simple fact: letting the bike hire for free could enhances the number of tourists. But let see the winners right now and go green !
1. Amsterdam is doubtless the capital of the biking Europe. There are many bikes, many bike lanes, a bike culture and a bike education . Also an amazing permissive city.
2. Copenhagen is similar to Amsterdam in many aspects, and is still a little behind. The neighboring Holland is a model for many danish bikers.
3.Beijing is the Asian capital of bike. The proportions are unbelievable, and here starts to appear an unknown phenomenon: during the rush hours there are so many bikers, that they must go out from the lanes and the cars have literally no place anymore. Hard to imagine how could damage all these bikers if they would drive cars!

The Chinese Government counted 9 millions bikes in Beijing. During the rush hours the view is mesmerizing.
4. Portland, Oregon is the American Mecca of bikers. There are bike factories, specially B&B for bikers, organized tours for bikers. This city simply lives on pedals and the cars are really outsiders here. Some hotels simply offers here free bikes for the guests, and the parking places have been replaced through bike corrals. Portland stays 10 years before any American city for bike culture and civilization.
5. Chicago entends to become within a few years America’s most bike friendly city based on a plan. But the simply wish is not enough, if they don’t get the necessary culture and education. Anyway, congratulation for the wish, and let your dreams come true. But it won’t be easy in any circumstances!
Discovering a city by bike offers many views and possibilities which are imposible behind a car windshield. And the locals will accept you much easier. Guranteed.

I love an eco-friendly vacay! You left out what to do to make your stay eco-friendly as well! My go-to resource online for hotels is http://www.EnvironmentallyFriendlyHotels.com as they list a hotel’s green features all the way down to if they compost! They even list locals that offer B&B services! Thanks again for the list! Here’s hoping I can visit them soon!

The notion that Chicago should even be considered as one of the world’s 5 most bike friendly cities is ridiculous! A few people milling around on fixed-wheel bikes doesn’t constitute a bike friendly city. Chicago has virtually no bike lanes, no bike parking facilities and some of the worst road surfaces that even the poorest African nation would be ashamed of. Just about every city in Europe would beat Chicago by these standards, not to mention the rest of the world! It’s nice to dream, but seriously Chicago, can you really be that deluded?
