Hello, Big Apple! I am actually not a born New Yorker, but neither a greenhorn anymore. And I have some insider tips to be shared with you.

Times Square looks obsolete
First of all, no matter whom nation or language you belong, there is no chance not to find co nationals in this mega city! There are 180 nations in New York, and every of this community has a distinctive neighborhood and restaurant. I would advise you to get in advance some informations and recommendations about your compatriots in New York. Maybe they can be helpful in making your stay in New York more interesting, more attractive and much cheaper.

An interesting museum is the Gugenheim
My first tip for a cheap stay in New York is not to stay in New York! Choice a hotel in New jersey, or by the Newark Airport. Booking these hotels is much cheaper on line, and you can reach Manhattan by ferry, bus or subway within 15 minutes. It is a big save, I am sure.
Another tip: avoid Times Square, it seemed to me so obsolete! It doesn’t worth to be visited anymore, in my humble opinion. But don’t avoid anymore the subway, is much safer than in the 80’s! Actually, all the City of New York is much safer, the crime rate diminished considerably and is nowadays comparable with any small town in the United States. Besides, the subway is even safer than the rest of the city, and is very cheap ( providing you got the right card, tailored to your needs!).

Rockefeller Center in Manhattan is a landmark for New York
Third tip: In order to get discounts by visiting landmarks, get a pass! There are more scheme available, acording to your wishes and schedule (Explorer pass, City pass, New York Pass) with prices from 10 to 100 $.
Fourth tip: the secret bars from New York. If you entered once in a normal ordinary bar from New York, maybe you asked yourself after the first round where might be the fancy people from New York. Well, there are many fancy bars in New York for the jet set, but they are not opened 100 % to public access. These bars are usually behind a telephone booth, and you must call from that booth the bar call number ( supposing you have it, as some bars, e.g. Milk and Honey changes the call number very often!). It is not easy entering this world and these bars, but these are the places where Jude Law and Lindsay Lohan go. Milk and Honey is the absolutely top of the top, but there are also other important names: La Esquina; Angel’s Share; PDT (stays for Please Don’t Tell).

Spectacular skyline of New York at night
Visit New York and its secret bars, and visit the other landmarks of New York, its museums etc. There are plenty of things to do in New York, the city that never sleeps.

Times Square is NOT obsolete, it’s just very, very touristy. But it’s worth looking around anyhow, even if just for the ads and the weird costumes and unusual vehicles that sometimes show up in the square..
