Going around the world with a knapsack on you back might be your idea of a good and adventurous trip. For those people who are going up and down to work or on some errand or the other, this might not be so. There will be very few people who are really keen on stopping on the highway when they see a person thumbing for a lift. The kinds of things that keep happening to those unsuspecting good Samaritans are sometimes so fearful and horrific that most people are deterred from giving anybody a lift however genuine and harmless they may be.

From time to time there are a few people who are real harmless hitchhikers, out looking for the best and cheapest way to reach their favoured destinations. The point is to be able to alienate them from their dubious counterparts. This requires a lot of discretion and a keen sense of alertness. You need to be able to make a quick decision about stopping; otherwise, the only alternative is to keep moving on. Most drivers take the easy way out and proceed without even bothering to look at the hopefuls on the side of the road who are trying to hitch a lift.

One of the major dangers that drivers envisage is the possibility of a hitchhiker turning out to be either a vehicle-hijacker or a kidnapper. Either way, the driver will be the victim. For many truck operators and truck drivers this is their worst fear come true. They are unable to figure out till the very last moment whether the person is genuine or not. In fact there are many operators who have a sign painted on the sides of their vehicle that indicate that they do not give lifts to people. This is to ensure that their vehicles are safe and there is no danger of anybody overpowering the driver.

Hollywood has also been responsible for immortalizing the hitchhiker as a romantic nomad full of ideas to save the world through this trekking across the countryside with the occasional help of a few drivers. This romantic idea is not something that people fall prey to, today. With the way in which terrorist strikes have been happening all over the world, crossing barriers of race, creed or sex, there is no way that hitchhikers are going to be viewed without any suspicion. There is no point trying to hope for some good soul to help you on your travels with only good intentions in mind.

Till now we have discussed how hitchhikers could pose a threat to drivers; but, what about having the tables turned? There have been quite a few horror stories about drivers who have given hikers a lift and exploited them in more ways than one. Therefore, hitchhiking needs to be viewed seriously, if you really want to cover some ground in a country you do not know very well. It is necessary to be prepared for any kind of eventuality and also learn a few self-preservation skills. It would also be useful to learn a few methods of self-defence. The motto is: be prepared.
