You really should hurry up to see the city of Phnom Penh in the today state, as it is still genuine and out of the mass tourism.

Colonial villa in Phnom Penh
The city of Phnom Penh was grounded in the XIIIth century, when enemies conquered the Cambodian capital of Angkor Wat. The local ruling family took then a stupa, which is a ritual statue, from Angkor and settled the new capital at Phnom Wat (Phnom was a local wealthy widow very useful and important in this operation). You can still visit today the Phnom Wat and the originally stupa. It is nothing very spectacular, but the surrounding park is magnificent. Almost 100 years long, up to 1953, Cambodia was ruled by the French colonial empire. They brought a major contribution to the development of Phnom Penh, who became the Pearl of Asia. The city was almost totally rebuild, and in many places there still are traces of the French colonial style in architecture and way of life

After gaining Independence from France, Phnom Penh showed an explosive developpment as the capital city of a new independent country. But this golden times for Phnom Penh only lasted 20 years long, when Pol Pot and the Red Khmere regime took over the power in 1974. The only four years of this comunist repressive regime were enough for a mass genocide. Mass executions, tortures and other similar methods were used and abused by the Red Khmere regime. An accident of the history, comparable with the german nazi regime. The Vietnam army liberated Phnom Penh and Cambodia in 1978, but this remains an event with strong controversial judgements, due to unfriendly behaviour of the Vietnamese.

Phnom Penh lies at the cross of three major rivers: Mekong, Bassac and Tonle Sap and its mainly streets are former channels, modified by the French colonial rulers. The city’s project and infrastructure are still the french ones from 150 years ago. The Vietnamese left behind the Russian market, where you can still get today good stuff at discount prices, e.g. the traditionally krama, which is a scarf used in many inventive ways by the locals.
After the dissolution and fall of the Red Khmere regime the necesary work for the city infrastructure has been postponed for the lack of capital. Which is the major advantage of the today visitors, who can get a taste of a nice city with a strong French touch. But you must hury up to get Phnom Penh in this state, as the things are going to change to the ground: the necessary investments are going to come soon from France, Japan and Australia.

The Silver Pagoda And The Royal palace
For a today visitors Phnom Penh has a lot to offer: a few excellent french style restaurants; daily cruises on Mekong River; luxury hotels at bargain prices; Genocide Museum; big parks; excellent shopping posibilities and a vibrant night life, making it similar to Bangkok. Avoid first date sex in Phnom Penh, as AIDS is a big problem. Use the necesary condoms brought by yourself ( the local condom might be too small for westerners). Also to avoid are the bargain propositions made on the streets, but if you refuse firmly there is no trouble anymore. Be very carefully by crossing the streets and avoid driving in Phnom Penh, as locals are very bad drivers. When taking a taxi or a tuk tuk (the local motor ricksha) be sure that the driver knows where to drive you. Usually, the taxi drivers can speak very limited english, and many will be polite saying ” no problem”, though they had no idea where you wanna go.
